Book Review: Stargirl
Summary: 5 Stars

"She was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. In our minds, we tried to pin her to corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew." There's a new girl at Mica Area High School. The students are baffled by how...different she is. She calls herself Stargirl, brings her pet rat to school in her pocket, and plays the ukulele in the lunchroom. Somehow, her presence completely changes everyone at school. This is a great book that I would reccomend to any young adult. Stargirl is a very realistic book. For the most part, it accurately shows how teenagers feel about their friends and popularity. One thing that isn't right, though, is that all the students seem to act like one unit. They all like Stargirl, or they all don't like her. There aren't many characters besides kid's whose name they only mention once or twice, but the main characters are very lifelike. This is one of my favorite books. It provides a new perspective on life and school. Reading Stargirl has definitely changed my life.

Book Review: shocking, fresh, and alluring
Summary: 4 Stars

"We did not know what to make of her.
In our minds we tried to pin her to corkboard like a butterfly,
but the pin merely went trough and away she flew."

StarGirl is a new kid in Mica High. She looks different, she behaves different. "She laughed when there was no joke. She danced when there was no music. She had no friends, yet she was the friendliest person in school." She is true to herself - no masks, no pretending.

Her originality is shocking, fresh, and alluring enough to bring the awakening to "the dormant mud frogs we had been for so long". But it's not long before her nonconformity turns everyone against her... even the boy she likes. Will StarGirl stand true to herself, no matter what are the stakes?

This book is a dazzling tribute to originality, individuality, and perils of popularity of modern day society. Controversial and truthful, a splendid read.

Book Review: great book, but will definitely be more appreciated by girls
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this book for my daughter, but I read it first. It is beautifully written, and very engaging. Yes, Stargirl is not realistic. She's not really meant to be realistic, though, so it works. At it's heart, the book is about individuality and nonconformity, but the writer accomplishes much more than that. Even though his characters are exaggerated, he manages to capture many of the emotions and anxieties that kids feel going through their school years; especially in small, rural communities. If you read a few of the one star ratings, you will notice that the reviews are poorly written and that the reviewers do not seem particularly reliable as far as literature goes; and very closed minded. This really is a wonderful book that can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages. However, I would say that I would be careful about recommending it to a teenage boy. The picturesque writing style, and the romantic nature of the book will not appeal to the majority of them. I don't think my son would particularly enjoy it. My daughter, however, enjoyed it very much.

Book Review: Wonderful book!
Summary: 5 Stars

Star girl by Jerry Spinelli is a wonderful story about a girl named Star Girl who is very different from the other student attending Mica High. There she will meet a normal boy named Leo the she wil befriend. Star girl is a quite lovely book that puts a positive image out about being different.
In the beginning of the book our friendly character Star girl shows up in a long white dress that covers her arms and neck. In high school this is something that most kids don't wear or else they will be made fun of. Also Star Girl has a pet rat named Cinnamon and one day she tried to sing happy birthday to the most popular girl in school and almost threw the rat to its death. It's a rather good book that will keep you reading for hours and once your done it will leave you wanting more.
If I could only use one word to describe it I would use brilliant. Although this book is not predictable it is sweet and kind and it will leave you with a very good taste in your mouth. So to sum it all up it is a very well rounded book.

Summary: 5 Stars

When my oldest daughter was in fifth grade, we read Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli in our mother-daughter book club. The girls all liked it, but they couldn't really identify well with the issues brought up in the book: What does it mean to be popular in school, can you find friends who accept you for who you are even when you're different from the mainstream, are you strong enough to go against the popular mindset by befriending someone who is different?

The moms on the other hand, got the issues exactly. We remembered all too well the days of junior high and high school when you're not only trying to determine who you are, but also realizing that who you choose to hang out with is a reflection of that. We thought the book was excellently done, and that we had maybe read it when our girls were too young.

This book is recommended on Amazon for ages 10 - 14, but I'm more inclined to agree with the age recommendation by Publisher's Weekly, which is 12 and up.
