Book Review: A Journey of Nonconformity
Summary: 4 Stars

As a teacher of gifted middle school students, I saw shreds of them all embodied in Jerry Spinelli's sensitive, caring nonconformist protagonist, Stargirl. Stargirl gives a voice to those that just don't fit in the Abercrombie-Hollister-Hot Topic-wearing crowd. She is a free spirit that teaches Leo, our popular boy, that fitting in isn't necessarily all it's cracked up to be. While she is a cheerleader, and does don the uniform, she cheers for everyone - even the opposing team's scores. This leads to a public ostracizing of Stargirl, and Leo just can't cope. Caving to the pressure, Leo begs Stargirl to change what makes her unique. Because of her love for him, she does, but Leo quickly realizes that the old adage may ring true: Be careful what you wish for, because you just may get it. However, that's not the end of this delightful tale of individuality; the ethereal spirit of Stargirl will linger forever in the minds of the characters and your young ones.

Book Review: Exciting read
Summary: 5 Stars

Very cute story of a girl who lives life to the fullest. Stargirl is a story about a high school girl who is very different then most teenagers. She is always happy and giving to others. Stargirl sings happy birthday to people in the lunch room while playing her ukelele. The other students just look at her and just talk about how unique she is compared to others.

Stargirl goes to a football game and is the best entertainment that has been seen at the football games in a long time. While the marching band of about a dozen members marches and plays their instruments Stargirl is in the background dancing and just having fun. The teams come back out on the field and start to warm up and Stargirl warms up with them. The ref has to chase her off the field so that they can finish the game. After her performance at that game people started to attend just waiting to see her.

I would read this book again just for fun.

Book Review: I read this book for English class...
Summary: 1 Stars

When my English teacher went to assign us our new book, we all knew which book it was going to be since other classes had had them.

Now everyone hears of this book saying how it helped them to become someone, or rather, find out who they were. I read this book for one reason-to get a good grade in English.

Jerry Spinelli has written good books, don't get me wrong, but Stargirl was basically taking the stereotypical idea of "the new kid in school" and twisting it in a way to which the girl was this odd person out of the blue.

Never mind the fact that Leo, the narrator, and his best friend (whom I have forgotten the name of), sound very immature. They're supposed to be well into high school, but they sound like 7th graders.

I was very disappointed when I read this book as I expected something more out of it than what I got.

Book Review: I Might Have Heard A Moa
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was fantastic! I had always passed it in the bookstore but never made an effort to buy it or read it until this past weekend.

I, literally, could not put this book down. It's a story about a boy and a girl like most stories are, only this girl is different. She wears long Pioneer-like skirts. She strums her Ukelele in the lunch room. She carries her pet rat Cinnamon around in her sunflower bag. Leo Borlock is smitten. With just one smile he knows he has to have her.

It's a great story that tells about first love and the hardships of trying to fit in with the popular crowd. By the ending pages of this book, I was bawling. It was perfect and heart warming. Great for teenagers (me myself being one) but it's also good for younger or even older people. A must read for anyone looking to curl up and pass some time!

Book Review: first love and nonconformity
Summary: 4 Stars

The years in high school are really the years in which you discover what kind of person you really want to be. It is where you are allowed to make your first big mistakes in life, in love, and hopefully learn from them. Leo, the narrator of Stargirl, meets the nonconformist Stargirl Caraway and the two, through the actions, decisions and consequences that follow, propel each other into a more adult understanding of love, community, mob mentality, acceptance, courage and sadly, the events that follow when all of those things fail. It is a touching story about how the people you meet at this time in your life and how you react to them can really shape who and what you become.
