Book Review: An Essential Chop-Builder

You ever watch those guys that can make even a practice pad sound awesome? They shred their pad with amazing chops, stringing together complex rhythms with mind-blowing speed, touch and accuracy? Those guys practice Stick Control!
Stick Control is one of those resources that is simple to start but can take years or decades to really master, and that's if you practice it the way Stone recommends. Drummers have discovered almost an infinite number of ways to apply this book, so this is a book that works just as well for beginners as it does for the pros.
The idea of this book is really quite simple. Each page has a number of short exercises, each exercise shows the sticking pattern you are to apply, R for right hand, L for left. Simple, eh? Well, not so much. As you progress the sticking patterns become more complex, odd time signatures start cropping up, as well as flams, open/closed rolls and things of that nature.
Stone recommends practicing each exercise 20 times before moving on to the next. On my first run through I'm more or less following Stone's recommendation. What I'm doing is practicing each exercise at least 20 times and I'll work on a given page for a week before moving on to the next page. I try to practice without stopping at all for a full hour, which means I'll do a page one to four times, depending on what tempo I'm practicing, to complete an hour long session. With a busy life it can be hard to work on a single book for a full hour a day (there's so much more to practice outside of this book!), so often I just practice as much as time will allow.
Here are a couple tips
- If you're a new drummer, make sure you have a proper stroke. If you have any bad habits this book WILL solidify them! It's worth checking out a drum instructor, if only to make sure you have a solid foundation for your stroke.
- I recommend practicing it in a similar way to the way I am for your first run through. There are a bazillion ways to work through this book, make your first trip the way Stone recommends (or similar). This may take a year but it's worth it. Once you've worked through this book this way then start exploring the many other possibilities.
- An hour a day is recommended, but even 20 minutes a day is better than nothing. Work with this book as much as you possibly can, but don't forget there are many other things you can be working on such as limb independence, different musical styles, etc.
This is a legendary book and easily deserves five stars. You want chops? Then spend the $10 and pick this up! I have my backpack near me everywhere I go. I keep my essentials in there - first aid, change of clothes, leatherman, whatever book I'm currently reading, etc. Just as essential is a pair of sticks, a small (6 inch) real-feel practice pad and a beat up copy of Stick Control.
