Muth again takes a traditional well-known story, and creates a whole new context from which to enjoy and learn from. Take three wise Buddhist monks, suspicious, frightened villagers, one brave little girl, and three stones, and you've got the start to a journey that will ultimately answer the question of what makes us happy.
Muth's watercolor illustrations are filled with Chinese symbols, and cultural expressions. The author's note is at the back of the book, but it's definitely worthwhile to read it before the story. For example, Muth explained that he used the traditional Buddha story, "where tricksters spread enlightenment rather than seeking gain for themselves." and he explained what each monk symbolizes in Chinese lore.
