Book Review: Covers the Basics

This is the only book I own on chicken raising. This year I bought my first chicks, built a coop (entirely from scrap, to a plan I designed myself) and raised a nice little flock. It has all the information you really need to get started.
I have dealt with cold weather, predators, slaughtering, chickens getting loose and into the neighbors' trees, etc. and never needed more than this one book. Other reviewers mentioned it doesn't go much into breeds, or information on keeping a couple of chickens as pets. It does however tell you the difference between breed types - meat birds, layers, dual-purpose, ornamental birds, and bantams. Decide which one of those suits your needs, and from there you can easily do more research on the internet or just ask at the local feed store. The book also gives information on breeds by comb style (certain combs are better for hotter or colder weather), size, temperment, and self-reliance. That's all it took for me to choose my chickens. I live near Wisconsin, so I got Wyandottes, a dual-purpose heritage breed developed in this region. I picked the silver laced ones becasue they are better at avoiding predators, and I like the way they look. My chickens are doing great! (If you are new to this, don't go looking for the rarest breed you can find, just try bantams, or a dual-purpose heritage breed, they are lovely, hardy, and pretty much look after themselves. After you learn the basics - and it's not hard! - you will develop your own tastes and interests in breeds.)
As for keeping chickens as pets, that's even easier than raising them for food. Check out one of the Backyard Chicken sites on the 'net, but basically the same as raising "traditional" flocks, but on a smaller scale.
If this book seems to lack information, take a deep breath, you might be over-thinking things. With any animal keeping endeavor you will need to adjust the "expert's" information to suit your own unique situation, and some things can really only be learned by experience, so no book will ever cover it all. The ONLY thing this book lacks, in my view, is a good anatomical illustration. Well, it would also be nice to see some warnings about lead paint in old farm buildings - that's something I have yet to see addressed in ANY farmsteading / simple living / how to book. Overall though, Storey's Guide covers it all - get this book, read it through, you'll be fine. Happy Chicken-Keeping!
