Book Reviews of Stranger In Paradise (Jesse Stone)Book Review: Time Jesse Retire Summary: 1 Stars
Although amazon indicated this book isn't to be released until 2/09, it must refer to a different publisher, or paperback. It was published by Putnam in '08.
The major challenge for a successful suspense writer in a series of books focused on one character is keeping that character fresh and evolving. Parker is, obviously, a successful writer and his Jesse Stone character a literary fixture.
Of this book the TORANTO STAR reviewer wrote: "Fresh and different...as crisp as ever."
Not true. While the plot line is moderately entertaining, at mid-point the end is in sight. While some of the dialogue is crisp, the psycho-plots are not different - they're redundant and over-played.
If Parker keeps with this series, Jesse & Jess will be in the nursing home meeting occasionally in the dining room trying to decide what to do with their desires for each other, while they chase other skirts and pants, respectively.
Enough already.
It's time Parker retire Jesse. I'll try to remember the earlier books.
Book Review: Another Great Story from Parker Summary: 5 Stars
Just because he's been writing for decades, don't assumer that Parker is in any sort of rut. Stranger in Paradise is as good as anything Parker has ever written. The plot pulses, surprises, and thrills.
I am just as glad that Stone and Randall are not together. They need to go their separate ways, and if they do, we readers get two great story lines instead of one. Okay, Jenn is back, that see-saw is being milked for more than it's worth, like Spenser's getting walked out on oh so many decades ago.
Minor kvetch: reading Parker's misuse of `disinterested' is like hearing Pablo Casals play a sour note.
I suspect that Amber will appear in future books, and that Crow is being groomed to become another Hawk. Crow, Hawk, birds of a feather. It will be interesting to see how this character develops.
note: I was amused to see that some reviewers didn't like this book because it's not like Parker's others, and some reviewers didn't like this book because it's just like Parker's others. Hard to please people, isn't it!
Book Review: Tom Selleck sold me on the book series Summary: 4 Stars
I first learned of the Jesse Stone series from TV. Having somehow grown bored with Spenser, Hawk and Boston years earlier, a setting in Maine appealed to my taste for the unfamiliar. So I locked onto _Stranger in Paradise_ with relish. I have high praise for the novel, particularly since the story is fast-paced. At the conclusion I realized the appeal the book's 73 (!) chapters held for me: the chapters were like monkey bars, both easy to get started -- because the reader is drawn in -- and non-linear in the sense the plot does go back and forth from scene to scene. You have to pay attention. Certainly, the TV series presented me with visualizations I may have otherwise lacked, and that added to my enjoyment.
All in all, Mr. Parker, a memorable character and a fine read.
Book Review: stranger in paradise a jessie stone book Summary: 5 Stars
AS ALWAYS, WHEN I READ A ROBERT PARKER BOOK, I KNOW IT WILL BE GOOD. BUT HE HAS OUT DONE HIMSELF WITH THE JESSE STONE SERIES. I FEEL LIKE I AM RIGHT THERE WITH JESSE STONE. CAN'T WAIT TO READ THE NEXT ONE. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK MR. PARKER
Book Review: Crow Said... Summary: 1 Stars
I was super excited to read this book but ended up dissapointed. I couldn't get passed the "Jesse said and Crow said and Molly said after EVERY sentence. Incredibly redundant, which makes it difficult to follow.
