Book Reviews of Streetwise Paris Laminated City Center Street MapBook Review: Carry it in your pocket, and don't look like a tourist Summary: 5 StarsStreetwise maps are the perfect thing for not looking too much like a tourist in any city. They fold up easily every time. They are a good size for putting in your pocket or in a purse - about the size of a standard business size envelope. And they are sturdy heavy paper stock with good laminated plastic.
Paris, tourist season is about to start for 2009. This map is the perfect addition to other guidebooks (Paris (EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE)). Read the book in the hotel the night before. Use a white board marker or a grease pencil to highlight where you are headed and leave the book at the hotel. This map is really only useful for the walker / metro taker. Do not ever try to drive in Paris with this map, you will get so lost you'll never find your way out (GPS is the only way to go in that city).
The good of this map - core of the city, the most visited places by most tourists. I lived in Paris for 2 years, and this map has the essential streets. There might be a tiny street here or there not shown, but a one block long street I know well, Rue du Sabot, is shown. My interpretation, virtually every street in the core area mapped is shown on this map. Major monuments are called out with a 3-D effect drawing of the building. You won't find Musse Marmottan on here, but all the big attractions are listed. There's a pretty good map of Bois de Boulogne.
There is also an index of street names with letter / number coordinates. One panel is a solid metro map, pretty standard map. Included in that map are Roissy (CDG, the airport), Disneyland, and Versailles. There is no detail at any of these stops, but the routes are clearly marked to those stops.
The not so great - well Sacre Coeur (Montmartre) is not detailed here. That is one area a lot of tourists visit, and a miss. La Defense is not here. There's several arrondisments not included, but honestly there isn't much a tourist would visit in these areas. If you insist on visiting those areas, take a great big fold out map - you'll need it anyway. For anyone to say that this map is worthless because the 16th ar is left off, really doesn't understand the purpose of this map. And frankly, Streetwise had to make a choice, show the entire city and make the folding a nightmare, the map huge, or the scale miniscule - or focus on the key areas. I think they did a great job balancing those factors.
The update of this map bought in May of 2009 is dated 2009. Not much really changes in Paris. So if you have an older version, it will more than likely work today. The RER portion of the metro has expanded over the years, but not so much as to make the older maps useless.
From somebody that has spent a lot of time in this beautiful city, the Streetwise map of Paris is a welcome pedestrian companion.

The City of Light, the City of Love and the City of Romance, familiar platitudes, but once you experience it for yourself you understand why. There is a je ne sais quoi allure to this city that beguiles, but never completely reveals what makes it so universally appealing. Artists, poets, writers, and composers have tried to define exactly what it is about this place, and yet they succeed only to a point. Perhaps it is as elusive as defining love, for to be in Paris entails experiencing love, about someone, something, some place. There is so much to do - you know the big ones, the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, Sacre Coeur, St. Germain des Pres, the Left Bank, the Right Bank, the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs Elys?es, the Op?ra- but don't miss the fun of discovering the small ones, the ones off the beaten path. Nothing like taking your time strolling thru the turn of the century mansion that houses Mus?e Marmottan then enjoying a caf? and patisserie in the museums jewel box caf?. Wandering aimlessly is romantic. Getting lost isn't romantic. In fact there are few things that can drain the romance out of a situation faster than realizing that you're hopelessly lost. So take your travel map and put it away if you want to wander, but have no fear that your wandering will turn into a lost odyssey. You can always pull out the STREETWISE?
