Book Reviews of Strong Women Stay Young (Revised Edition)

Book Review: Excellent Resource for Women of All Ages
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the revised edition of "Strong Women Stay Young", and in this edition there have been quite a few changes in the basic weight-training routine offered in the original edition of this book. The author offers a series of eight weight-training exercises which can be performed at home with equipment consisting only of a set of ankle weights and a set of dumbbells. The basic workout includes a new (in this edition) and very effective warm-up exercise, then three leg exercise done with ankle weights, three arm exercises to be performed with free weights, and finally a calf-stretching exercise done using your own body weight. The instructions for doing each exercise are very clear. Another great feature of this book (compared to some other weight-training books for women) is that the models shown doing the excercises look like real women, and many of them are even older women.

This book is aimed primarily at older (post-menopausal) women who want to maintain their bone density. However, as a woman in my forties who wanted to start a weight-training program at home, I found it to be right on target for my needs as well. I've been using the program for a few months, and now I've added some additional exercises for the abdomen given in the last part of the book.

Book Review: An Inspirational, life changing read
Summary: 5 Stars

Before I read this book I was a 92 year old, sedentary female with ostioporosis. i could not lift up grocery bags, i had a great deal of trouble climbing stairs and i used a walker. when an old friend suggested i read this book, i was skeptical. i was a old woman, and if i tried lifting wheights my bones would break. But I ended up reading it anyway. i started with lifting half puond wheights and followed miriams exercises. after about a month, i was doing five pounds and also was useing ankle wheights. after staying with the exersises for about three months i started feeling alot more spry, and i foung myself doing things i hadn't done for years like climbing stairs with ease and going for walks. its been two years now since i started the exersises, and i am in great shape. i have regained alot of muscle and my bones are stronger. ive thrown away my walker and i have much better balance. this book has changed my life and the way i live. i can now play with my grandchildren and ive even started going for jogs. I may still be in my ninties, but i feel like im twenty again.

Book Review: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - SIMPLE, YET EFFECTIVE EXERCISE
Summary: 5 Stars

On a visit to the library, I picked up this book and casually flipped through it. I checked the book out, took it home and returned it only after I realized it was being used twice a week for the last month and overdue.

The first thing that stands out is the page formatting with call-out boxes and drawings of people doing the exercises; not actual pictures of people which can provide unclear examples in comparison to drawings.

This is an exercise/health book for women of all ages. The exercises are extremely simple and really do work. The directions are simple to follow. For a twice a week program and results one can see and feel after two weeks, it is well worth the price. Enthusiastic walker? Couch Potato? It works for both.

If you decide to actually read it, there are interesting factoids and reasons to continue to build your muscle strength.

Book Review: This Works
Summary: 5 Stars

I started Nelson's program last July and now, almost one year later, i am still following the program with great results. I am 42 and have not followed a regular exercise program for more than a few months since high school. I am always skeptical of the latest fad, but this is not a fad! This book is a must read for anyone older than 40. Learning that you systematically lose muscle mass from age 40 on should be inspiration enough to start strength training. Another bonus from following the program: my young daughter tells people that her mommy is strong. Isn't that the image you want to portray for your kids? I am fully persuaded, too, by Nelson's argument that once you start strength training that it is an upward spiral. That is, aerobic activities become fun again (because you have strong muscles to use, not flabby ones to strain).

Book Review: You will see results
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was recommended to me by a 40-something doctor with whom I work. I noticed her arms were more 'cut' and that her clothes were fitting better, and I asked her what she was doing. She told me about Strong Women Stay Young and I ordered it.

I read through the book and loved it. It's based on science, not some new fad, and it's easy for the lay person to understand. The exercises are simple and easy to do. You can do them anywhere anytime. I noticed results in my upper and lower legs and my upper arms within one month. It's easy to see that this regimen can be used for a lifetime. I didn't lose any weight, but I appear slimmer and I feel better and stronger. My balance is better, too. I highly recommend this book and I have no intention of reselling mine. I've urged several friends to buy it.
