Book Reviews of Sundays at Tiffany'sBook Review: Nice try Summary: 2 Stars
This review is not a synopsis, FYI. Read the product description for that.
When I first set down this book, I was exasperated and annoyed. But then I realized that just because I didn't enjoy it, doesn't mean that others can't or shouldn't. Every reader is different and is capable of enjoying aspects of a novel that I am free to despise. Here is a list of grievances that I have:
1. Random use of third-person omniscient (Michael's POV) to 1st person (Jane).
2. The font is huge.
3. Chapter 27 is racist. The only homeless he mentioned were beaten down, illiterate blacks with too many kids.
4. The dialogue was often unrealistic. Perhaps overtly sappy. But maybe that writing style appeals to pre-teens, but not to me as a young adult.
5. Michael is kind of a pedophile.
6. Instead of encouraging readers to infer, Patterson often throws details at us. For example in chapter 49 he practically announces through dialogue between Jane and her mother that one of them is going to die. Great job at foreshadowing.
7. Chapter 54 is rediculous. Michael, an imaginary friend who's supposed to be all kind and loving, is capable of punching people he barely knows in the face? C'mon now.
8. The characters are all poorly developed and static. There really was no growth, no change. I suppose Jane learned that being herself is the most important thing, but it just seems weak that she needed the help of a man to do so. The Michael character just seems programed to be the perfect man. He doesn't have any flaws. He's the extreme version of Mr. Right. And Hughe serves as his foil. Hughe is probably the character that is most realistic to me.
9. I'm sorry Patterson, but I don't accept the "just because" explanation for why Michael doesn't remember how old he is, when and where is next assignments are, or how he is capable of making money and taxis appear. It's very lazy of you to expect me to just "go along with it." Nor do I like how Michael suddenly becomes human, if that's what you can call it. It just doesn't make sense, and Patterson doesn't even try to make it so. I feel like the whole damn book is written on the faith and hope that readers won't notice the blinding discrepancies and gaping holes in this plot.
10. The ending was unbearably sappy. Predictable.
I think regardless of whether a book appeals to adults or younger readers, the writer is supposed to make you believe in what they're writing. Even if it's ridiculous. Good writers take impossible ideas and make them possible. Patterson didn't do that for me with this novel.
Summary of Sundays at Tiffany'sJane Margaux is a lonely little girl. Her mother, a powerful Broadway producer, makes time for her only once a week, for their Sunday trip to admire jewelry at Tiffany's. Jane has only one friend: a handsome, comforting, funny man named Michael. He's perfect. But only she can see him. Michael can't stay forever, though. On Jane's ninth birthday he leaves, promising her that she'll soon forget him. Years later, in her thirties, Jane is just as alone as she was as a child. And despite her own success as a playwright, she is even more trapped by her overbearing mother. Then she meets someone-a handsome, comforting, funny man. He's perfect. His name is Michael . . .
