Book Review: Modern Day " Story of O" with a Happy Ending
Summary: 4 Stars
This is the modern day version of the famous/infamous French novel "Story of O" by Pauline Reage that caused much controversy in the 1950's. In both stories, the heroines agreed to become the sex slaves of a group of wealthy and hedonistic men for one reason or another. On the surface, it was money that drove desperate mother Annabelle to submit herself to Kaelen, Gareth and their cousins in "Surrender." But was money the only motive? Did she not accept the task because she secretly fantasized about surrendering herself to multiple unknown men? That we'll never know, just as we never find out why the men agreed to participate in this game. The rest of the story in Surrender was similar to SOO: the ritual of bathing and dressing Anna by the incredibly sexy Kaelen (including a sensual shaving scene); Anna serving the men meals dressed in revealing outfits; the wearing of the "plug" as Ms. Zant so laconically named the object, and of course, the men sharing her like a sex toy. What differentiates Surrender from TSO is that the men became emotionally involved with Anna just as she felt attached to them and there was a happy ending, whereas in SOO, the dom became disinterested when the sub grew to be overly dependent on him. Secondly, while SOO is heavily into piercing and BDSM, Surrender has very little of these two elements.
As a work of erotica, Surrender is superbly written and packed with graphic and sensual sex scenes that are guaranteed to stir up the reader's blood. As a work of fiction, however, it lacks sufficient character and plot development: we never find out much about Kaelen, Gareth and their family, and why they feel like sharing a woman (the explanation at the end just did not cut it for me). Read it as what it is and you won't be disappointed in this book.
Summary of Surrender
Desperate straights call for desperate measures---If anyone had asked Anna before what she would be willing to do for money, what she'd just signed up for would NOT have been on the list. She's discovered, though, that the needy can't afford to be too picky. And, after all, what's six weeks in the scheme of things? Despite her internal pep talk, though, she discovers she isn't at all prepared for what she has to face in the mansion of ill repute-where 'no' is no longer a part of her vocabulary unless she wants to forfeit the money she needs so badly.
