Book Reviews of Sword Song: The Battle for LondonBook Review: The Saxon Tales Summary: 5 Stars
I love this series. I just read them all over again. These are the best books I've every read. And I'm a reader! I've read 1,000's of books. I think Uhtred is such a great hero---reluctant and flawed and very real.
I loved the Grail series and I remember I really liked the Arthur series. I'm afraid to read the Sharp series for fear that they won't be as enjoyable as the Saxon Tales.
If you haven't read them, and you like historical fiction, you MUST read these books. I hope he continues to write about Uhtred's life. In this last book he is still under 30 so I anticipate (hope for) more books.
Book Review: An interesting addition to the Saxon Tales Summary: 4 Stars
This is an interesting turn in the tales of Uthred of Bebbanburg. On the historical side, the book is weaker than the others. But in terms of fleshing out Uthred, his allegiances, his relationships (easily this is the happiest man in love ever in a Cornwell novel) and the era, the book may be one of the best.
Cornwell has certainly found his voice in these tales and is letting its protagonist grow in ways I think the some of his other characters have not. If you have liked the Saxon Tales up to this point, you could hardly go wrong continuing on the journey.
Book Review: Sword Song: The Battle for London Summary: 5 Stars
This is another great book by Bernard Cornwell. It is the fourth book in a series about ninth century England. It follows the adventures of Utred, a Saxon war lord. You really need to read all of these books, preferably in order of date publication. These books are really hard to put down, they'll make you read until late into the evening. Great battle sequences, tremendous story line. These books are in the form of historical fiction and I highly reccomend them as as really good reads. Each one gets better as they go along. Order them all!
Book Review: For a Very Narrow Audience Summary: 4 Stars
This is for those who loved "Beowulf" and very few other people. It's a blood and guts early history of England with Vikings and Saxons, Danes and Angles wielding battle axes and lopping off heads. There's a love story, but it's so slight that I wouldn't want to mislead readers. I enjoyed it as another way to look at the great tales of the bards of old. For all the gore, there are lovely scenes of ye olde Engelond, before it was "merry."
Book Review: Great Reading Summary: 5 Stars
Sword Song is the 4th, the last book of the Saxon Tales. The entire story from the 1st book, "The Last Kingdom" on, is rich with adventure, battle and history. Written in a fashion that carries you along right beside Uhtred, a remarkable warrior. I only wish there could have been more than 4 books in the series, I was sad to have to bid Uhtred farewell. Awesome journey from start to finish, The Saxon Tales.
