Book Reviews of TailSpin (FBI Series)Book Review: So bad...it has to be satire, right?? Summary: 1 Stars
How bad does a book have to be before an educated reader will be forced to put it down, if only for intellectual self-preservation? Apparently, as bad as "TailSpin". Alas, like several other readers, I purchased the book on the merits of the back cover blurb and the hints of aviation disaster: as a pilot, I enjoy such yarns. However, as a pilot, I also know that much of what Coulter has written here is utter dreck, total fantasy, the glaring lack of reality-based details painfully apparent to anyone who has rudimentary aviation knowledge, or who has read a minimal number of entries in the "thriller/suspense" genre. Never mind the silly bomb: where was the FAA? No one but no one has an aircraft accident without getting past the FAA. And yet Coulter ignores this most basic of realities, never mind any other number of fact-based strictures that generally provide the framework for rogue or specialist agents to work from. Tsk, tsk - poor research and hackneyed writing. In fact, so bad is it, so full of holes and devoid of critical detail, I found myself wondering if perhaps it was intentional on the author's part, a sly effort at writing thriller/suspense satire - a la Mad Magazine parodies. Perhaps Coulter would have served the reader better had she done so, but her franchise does not reflect this as her style.
One gets the impression that Coulter's audience is comprised primarily of romance afficionados, readers who do not generally read crime/suspense thrillers, certainly not those of the caliber of a Ludlum, Thor, Baldacci, &c. Therefore, one could understand (kinda-sorta) how such otherwise unaware readers would buy this dreck and consider it a worthwhile endeavor and good use of time. Egad. If you've read any of the above-named authors before, give Catherine Coulter a wide berth. You'll insult your intelligence otherwise.
Book Review: Catherine Coulter is the Queen of FBI Romance Suspense novels Summary: 5 Stars
Catherine Coulter is the Queen of FBI Romance Suspense novels. TailSpin brings back some favorite characters from the past and a few new ones.
Renowned psychologist Dr. Timothy MacLean is ill. He can no longer control what he says. Over the years many people have confided in the doctor, telling him their deepest darkest secrets. Someone wants to make sure he can't tell anyone else. Special Agent Jackson Crowne and MacLean are flying over the mountains of Kentucky when their plane goes down. Rachel has her own demons chasing her. She returns to Parlow, Kentucky hoping to take refuge with her uncle. She sees the plane going down and helps Jackson and MacLean to safety. Jackson and Rachel are attracted to each other but he knows she is hiding something from him.
Coulter successfully takes the suspenseful threads and weaves them together forming a riveting spine tingling mystery sure to keep readers on the edge of their seat. It always amazes me how Coulter can take several subplots and combine them to create a fantastic read. Nothing gets lost. As usual I read this book in one sitting. What's next MS Coulter?
Book Review: A waste of time Summary: 1 Stars
I have to say that the premise sounded great but the writing was amateurish and the plot not well thought out. I could not believe that that a writer of this caliber would come out with a book like this. For example, the main character's car broke down near the beginning of this book as she is fleeing people who are trying to murder her and as luck would have it this a small plane goes down near by. It turns out that one of the occupants of the plane is a law officer and she will not tell him her last name. Hello? Doesn't she think that the first thing they would do is look up the registration of her car? This is just one example of many where the plot was not well thought out. It appeared that it was thrown together to meet a deadline or something. But what it did do is cross her off of my list of authors to read. Michael Connelly has nothing to worry about.
Book Review: First and last Coulter book Summary: 3 Stars
I gave it 3 stars because I enjoyed some of the dialog. Also, I like to see strong women featured.
The story line seemed to jump/jerk and then ramble. The way the FBI agents confronted the rich and powerful was beyond unreal. They would have been lucky to get work as rent-a-cops after that.
Coulter has no idea what a firearm looks like or how it is used by law enforcement. "Fanning" a Kimber .45? Law enforcement folks are trained to shoot for center mass. Anything else would be hazardous to them and to the public they are supposed to consider protecting. So, why were so many (I think, all) the people shot by the FBI (and even by Rachael, who can be excused) shot in the arm or shoulder, on purpose? Coulter needs a tech consultant for those issues.
Book Review: Rachel's BRAID Summary: 2 Stars
I don't expect Coulter to compete with Ludlum, Baldacci, etc., but for goodness' sake....
I could have tolerated the shallow characters and the plot with huge holes in it - because it was fundamentally a good story and moved along fairly quickly, but I believe the author mentioned Rachel's 'charming braid' at least twice in every chapter..... Seriously!! We got it - she's pretty and has a unique braid in her hair...but the constant mention of it was so distracting.
I finished the book, so it gets two stars; buy it only if you are desperate for something in this genre to read.
