Book Reviews of Takedown: A ThrillerBook Review: Brad Thor: master of the thriller Summary: 5 Stars
There are few thriller writers who lay down such pulse-pounding action on each page that your overlook the enormous holes in the plot. Brad Thor is, simply stated, a master of the genre.
If you require plots that are meticulously laid out so that even the smallest action has a cause and a balanced reaction, forget Thor. But if your requirements are that every page has a boldly sketched good guys and equally delineated bad guys fighting it out, Thor is your man.
This is a story of today and tomorrow. Mohammed bin Mohammed is a radical Islamist bombmaker, a pedophile and the lynchpin in a scheme to get nuclear weapons for terrorists, weapons that will be used against the United States. Mohammed is snatched from his beachside villa by a team of covert operatives.
Scot Harvath is an American operative on loan to a clandestine anti-terorism unit. Single-handedly he snatches Sayed Jamal from his Canadian political asylum and delivers him back to the United States.
Mike Jaffe is also an operative and he is charged with extracting information from Mohammed and Sayed. Thanks to leftist media and politicians, there is a problem with exactly where the interrogation can take place and what means may be used. President Rutledge and his Secretary of Defense decide to ignore the gutless wonders and do it their way.
Somewhere in Scotland lives a dwarf whose life is guarded by two enormous, snow-white Caucasian Ovcharkas ("prized as an aggressive property guardian, the mighty Caucasian Ovcharka is an intimidating and committed protector with no equal"). The dwarf, known as the Troll, is a merchant of information. Visiting him is Abdul Ali, a merciless Muslim terrorist, who is charged with finding Mohammed bin Mohammed and rescuing him so his horrifying plan can be completed.
If you get the idea that Thor's characters are larger than life, you are absolutely correct. If you think that Thor's heroes are chest-thumping, incredibly capable combatants who believe in their nation and will do what is necessary to protect it, you are again right. If you think that Thor would sneer at wimpish, pacifisitic left-wingers who worry about the rights of terrorists who would willingly murder innocent civilians, you're right again.
So every page of Thor's novel is filled with generally violent action.
The bad guys open the ball by blowing up all the bridges and tunnels leading into New York City, killing thousands and putting President Rutledge's daughter in mortal danger. And all this bloodletting is merely a diversion so Ali and his gang of Chechen thugs can hunt for the hiding place where Mohammed bin Mohammed is being held prisoner and not at all gently interrogated.
Scot Horvath who just happens to be visiting New York City to see his special forces buddy is all there is to stop Ali.
If you're squeamish, don't pick up this book. If you don't believe the United States should pursue a vigorous defense of its existence, don't bother. If you think a thriller should always be about nuance and subtle shadings, you won't find happiness with Brad Thor.
If, on the other hand, you want non-stop action with larger than life heroes who overcome every obstacle to win, then Thor and his merry band are what you want. The plot has more holes than a pound of swiss cheese and some of the characters are more transparent than clear glass, but not one who appreciates a good old-fashioned thriller is going to care.
Brad Thor pulls it all off in great style!

Summary of Takedown: A ThrillerAfter years without a terrorist attack on American soil, one group has picked the 4th of July weekend to pull out all the stops. In a perfectly executed attack, all of the bridges and tunnels leading into and out of Manhattan are destroyed just as thousands of commuters begin their holiday exodus. With domestic efforts focused on search and rescue, a deadly team of highly trained foreign soldiers methodically makes its way through the city with the singular objective of locating one of their own -- a man so powerful that America will do anything to keep him hidden. Scot Harvath is now the country's only hope. Fighting his way through the burning streets of Manhattan, he must mount his own operation to locate a man the United States government refuses to admit even exists.
