Book Reviews of Tao Te Ching: The Definitive EditionBook Review: An edition you can sink your teeth into. Summary: 5 Stars
This edition of the Tao Te Ching is the only one you will ever need. The translation provided is beautiful, peotic, and understandable. The verbatim translation is absolutely amazing for really understanding what you're reading. It gives you the ability to create your own interpretation, and understand some of the more nuanced meanings of the original chinese text. The book gives you everything you need to simply enjoy the Tao Te Ching, and provides you with the first few steps toward a serious study of the work. Whether you are interested in the Tao Te Ching for spiritual, intellectual, or recreational purposes, this is the ideal book.
Book Review: A beautiful piece of work Summary: 5 Stars
This book is three in one - a graceful and seemingly accurate translation of the text into English, a literal character by character rendering with glossary, and reference material including some commentary, samples of other translations and bibliography.
Unlike typical approaches, these are separated so that reading for one purpose does not entangle one in footnotes and parenthesized comments best suited for another.
It might even serve as an introduction to written Chinese for those so inclined.
It seems of great value, particularly at the low price of this edition.
Book Review: The Tao That is Definitive is Not Tao. Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best translation of the Tao Te Ching I have ever seen. Jonathan Star gives very simple translations that are not bogged down by a scholar's need to sound intelligent. I hate cracking open a copy of the Tao and reading "The path being tread which can be traversed is in fact not the actual path." The knowledge contained in this book is supposed to be available to everyone, not just the highly educated.
He also included a "literal translation" of each verse which allows the reader to create their own translation. An excellent un-biased tool for anyone on the path.
Book Review: Love it, but wish the paper were a little better. Summary: 5 Stars
I love this book ... and this edition in particular especially so. My favorite points:
- the verbatim translation, very useful if you want to dig a little deeper
- the initial translation is very readable, and enjoyable.
- for the main text, there is a LOT of extra room on the pages for writing and notes. This is great for people like me who like to mark all over their books.
The *only* downside is that I wish the paper itself were a little higher quality. Other than that, I love it.
Book Review: Tao Teh Ching: A comparasion Summary: 5 Stars
Not since Arthur Waley's The Way and It's Power has there been
such a comprehensive examination of the Tao Teh Ching altho there have been many poor ones. One of the worst being Stephen
Mitchell's "Politically Correct" attempt some years ago. Apparently Mitchell does not speak Chinese and alternates "he"
with "she" which is nonsense. Star gives us a real translation
and a truely novel commentary.A most worthwhile addition to
one of the oldest of mystical works.
