Book Reviews of Tao of Jeet Kune DoBook Review: Deep, intelligent, interesting Summary: 5 Stars
Even though this book is very philosophical, if you're reading ToJKD just to learn the mystical arts of butt-kicking, you'll still come away with a strong education. Lee's art is about truly understanding fighting, not about the superficial stuff that works when your opponent is standing still. He is obviously very passionate; the book is an attempt to convey how he thinks about the Art. His passion is in fighting itself; he goes through systems without particular preference, searching through the useless parts to find the things he can learn from. In fact, Lee agonized about whether or not he should write this book, since he was afraid that people would think JKD is some formal system instead of a way of thinking. Sadly, this was supposed to be a seven-volume masterpiece where he dissects all the nuances of fighting, but his early death left only enough material for this single book. Still, this perhaps was the best compromise with Lee's wishes, since ToJKD contains the fundamental kernel of his thinking.
Book Review: This book helped me grow personally through the years. Summary: 5 Stars
As there are many reviews, I just wanted to add my personal experience with this book. I purchased this book when I first started martial arts (Tae Kwon Do and Filipino martial arts). It was interesting and had much good stuff. Seven years later, and a couple weeks ago, I started reading it again--5 minutes here, 10 minutes there. My view is very different now! Bruce Lee's notes and insights have a new meaning for me as I have a different perspective gained by my experience. In any case, it has continued to inspire and motivate me, as well as giving me hints for certain nuances in my training. Get this book ASAP and browse it. They are Bruce's personal notes, so you can read them a little at a time and gain knowledge each time. Let those little tidbits of wisdom rattle around your subconscious mind for a while, maybe seven years like me. The pick the book up again. The understanding and enlightenment you receive will be like a lightning bolt! Then perhaps you too will write a positive review like mine.
Book Review: The serius martial-artist's ORGAZM ! Summary: 5 Stars
When I first ordered TOJKD and the "Bruce Lee's Fighting Method" books , I did'nt know that Bruce was not only a super-gifted martial-artist , but also perhaps the greatest innovator of modern martial-arts since Sun Tzu or Myamoto Musashi !I soon learned it , as any knew reader would too. "Tao of Jeet Kune Do" made me feel like i've been struke by lightning in first read! So many enlightments , and such indepth look on EVERYTHING that makes a martial-artist an efficiant fighter! Bruce lee was a kinethetic genius , a very intelligent person , a gifted martial-artist , and an avangard-thinker - You will never think the same about martial arts practicallity again , and the change is for the better , believe me. A mixture of philosophy and down-to-earth tips , remarks concerning being better than you are now , and more than that , makes this one of the greatest martial-arts books ever written. A MUST FOR THE ANALLITIC/SCIENTIFIC MARTIAL-ARTIST.
Book Review: The beste ever written on combat Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best book i have ever read on the subject of combat ( not sparring ore competition ) the book gives you a guidet to the thaugts and mind of a great master of realistic hand to hand coombat. Lee was one of the first to realize that in order to train for the street you had to go all out everything goes and free your mind from styl-thinking, for instance developing qualities in all the different ranges of fighting ( kicking range, punching range, trapping, grappling...). You have to adapt no style as style and have no limitations whatsoever. I find this to be a very good guide for advanced students. I first bought this book 15 years ago, and did not understand much other than some of the foreword. Having practiced martial arts and selfdefense for the last ten years i now start to understand the tremendus insight and depht of this work. A must read for everyone wawnting to make sure that they train to survive outside of the ring as well as inside.
Book Review: Mind opening reading material...great for everyone!! Summary: 5 Stars
i just want to say...the whole point of the book is to expose & open minds to not only a new form of martial arts but to a way of thinking that allows you to be in harmony with everything around you. "7 problems with "The Art of Jeet Kune Do" by Bruce Lee, August 25, 2001 Reviewer: BFGalbraith " THIS GUY was sooo close minded when he read it that he doesnt deserve to have the book...although its good he read it & has many thoughts about it...i guess he was willing to give it a try but he didnt fully open himself to the ideas & philosy of the book. See, if he read it & compared the styles of martial arts & made them more efficient or understood why Bruce Lee would alter the moves & go from there, his reading expierience would have been so much more enjoyable. However , he just stopped reading the book & started to compare & critique it without fully understanding Bruce Lee's Book.
