Book Reviews of Tear SoupBook Review: Book about Grieving Summary: 5 Stars
This book is a nice way to let someone , who has suffered a loss of any kind, know that you understand how sad and difficult this situation is for them.Cards are good, but I have sent this book to people of all ages with a short handwritten note as an offering of condolence. It's format may seem juvenile, but its message is clear. Also because it is simply written, it is not a book that takes deep concentration, nor is it "preachy".These factors are helpful when the one grieving is overwhelmed with emotion.Certainly it is a book to help young people, but ANY age can benefit from it's messages. In my message to the recipient, I mention the books format and that it's messages are clear.Everyone I have sent it to has truly appreciated it.
Book Review: Excellent approach to grieving for families Summary: 5 Stars
Tear soup is a wonderfully illustrated children's book for adults written about how we each individually grieve loss in our lives. The story is about "Grandy," but she could just as easily be me or you, and Grandy has suffered a loss, so Grandy begins to make tear soup. Tear soup cannot be made just out of a can, but is an individual process, as unique as each chef; and only through the soup making can we fully heal and move on. The full page illustrations through which the text of the story run show an even richer tale of the other people and pets in Grandy's life who interact with her recipe and add a powerful depth to an already touching story which you can't help but relate to your own life.
Book Review: Awesome, awesome, and a million times awesome! Summary: 5 Stars
I lost my Dad 7 weeks ago - it was very sudden and completely unexpected. I have been really struggling, as has my 8 yo daughter, so I did some searching for books on grief that may help us both. I actually got this one for my daughter, but think it has helped me just as much, if not more!!
It's honest, yet gentle, and helps you realize that the way you grieve will be different than other people - even if you have lost the same person, or the same figure. As a total bonus to the text, the pictures are beautiful and enhance the book's theme immensely.
Because the book never explicitly says why Granny is grieving it is fantastic for anyone who is dealing with a loss of any kind.
Book Review: Great Book for a Tough Time Summary: 5 Stars
I was given this book following the sudden death of my mother and I was amazed at how well it explained exactly what I felt. There were no better words anyone could have spoken to me during this time. Tear Soup helped me to realize that the emotions I was feeling and the thoughts I had were all a normal part of the grieving process. I think so highly of this book, I bought a copy to have on hand as my friends parents are all aging and they will undoubtedly be needing it sometime in the future and I wanted to give to them what I so appreciated getting. If you know someone who has experienced a loss recently or if you are going through the grieving process yourself, I would encourage you to get this book.
Book Review: For Adults - wonderful Summary: 5 Stars
Our seven year old son just lost a four year battle against cancer. A friend gave me this book and it was a perfect recipe for grieving. I can't say enough good about it and its effect on me.
I'm not convinced that this is a book for children. The concepts and illustrations are too strong perhaps. (My 9yr old daughter is emotionally mature - but I'm not sure if I'll share this with her until she's older.) There are other more appropriate book for kids.
I think this is an amazing picture book for adults to realize and understand their own grieving process - without reading a textbook. I fetched my biggest crab-pot from the cupboard and plan to mke my own Tear Soup.
