Book Reviews of Tender Rebel

Book Review: The Mallory's *sigh* Johanna Lindsey's best series
Summary: 4 Stars

Okay, first off I must tell you this is not going to be run down on the plot but will be a review on what I thought of the book so there will be *SPOILERS*

I must start by saying that I love Johanna Lindsey's historical romance novels, she's the queen in my eyes! I completely adore the Mallory series and I will always claim them as my favourite. But I suppose it's my fault that I read Gentle Rogue first (3rd book in the series). I was completely blown away by it; James and George have to got to be my favourite couple of all time! James is most definitely my favourite Mallory male and he is just utterly wonderful. I like his humour, his strength, his passion and his abundant loyalty to his family even though he hides it. Generally I would have preferred the Anthony type male (tall, athletic, dark hair, and blue eyes). But James (6ft, brawny muscle, blond hair and green eyes) would simply take my breath away times and he's damn fictional! George of course was his ideal match in every way. She is beautiful, but that never seemed to over ride her character or define her in James eyes, her personality truly was what made her stand out to me - tenacious, funny and intelligent.

After realising this was a series (I always check now, just in case) I ordered Love Only Once (1st in series). I did enjoy it, Regan is great and Nicholas has his moments, but I tended to really just keep reading to find out more about James than anything (though it was good, I loved Nicholas blatant desire for Regan, he never hid it from her, the scene when he abducts her is very good). Then ordered Tender Rebel, and well for the first few pages I was completely uninterested (not a Mallory in sight). Roslynn was, hmmm, I won't say she bored me exactly, but there was nothing about her that interested me except when she slipped into her Scottish brogue which added a certain charm to her. Anthony was Anthony - delightful, but I just cannot see why he would be so bowled over by Roslynn so suddenly (I know it was a great deal of lust, she hadn't even spoken to him). James does allude to love at first sight half way through the book but surely a rakehell like Anthony is use to very beautiful women? Surely someone as hardened and disdainful as he is, Roslynn should never had affected him so. I also found the subplot to why Roslynn was trying to marry was annoying and dreary. The so-called villain was weak and stupid, and Roslynn really had no motivation to flee Scotland and do what she did. Her determination to believe low of Anthony at every turned was again annoying. He was a self-proclaimed rake yes, we know that, but he had never given her reason to doubt him so suddenly. Of course one could argue she was falling in love and trying to fight it, but that I find feeble and inexcusable and how she kept thinking Jeremy was Anthony's son even though everyone kept telling her he wasn't. Roslynn came across as stupid (surely she could have had a background check done on Anthony about his finances), with a decided lack of trust, and too emotional. I think Lindsey used her Scottish heritage as an excuse to let act like a b*tch whenever she felt like it!

The best part in this book was the dialogue. Funny and snappy, I tended to skim until I found it. But of course, there was James (yet again *sigh*) and the bits with him in it were my favourite. I loved reliving the moment when he and George encounter one another, and she kicked him in the shins. Anthony's teasing about her was hilarious and James reaction to her is great!

I don't want to finish this review on such a note though. The Mallory Series is wonderful and I guess I ruined it for myself by reading James and George's journey first. If you can start with the first one and go in order, I strongly suggest you do.

Summary of Tender Rebel

Scottish heiress Roslynn Chadwick needs the safety of marriage to protect her from an unscrupulous cousin and from the army of fortune-hunting scoundrels who covet her wealth and beauty. And Anthony Malory is everything she has been warned about.

A ruthless, irresistibly handsome English rogue, Malory's sensual blue eyes speak of limitless pleasures. How Roslynn wishes she dared love such a man, but believing his passionate promises will only lead her into uncertain realms - and to unimagined heights of love.
