Book Reviews of Term LimitsBook Review: The Turner Diaries meets Ayn Rand and the IRA for a Tea Party Summary: 1 Stars
I received this book as a present from a supposedly very devout Christian at the church I was attending some years ago. Since "Term Limits" is obviously a work of fiction, I agree it should first be judged on its literary merits and not the political ideology of the book's author.
(They were not there. The book was an exciting read, but Flynn's writing is at best juvenile.)
Now on to the real review: A rabid right wing manifesto (poorly) disguised as a spy thriller, "Term Limits" comes across as attempting to justify violence against a Constitutional government. That this book was published barely two years after the bombing of the Federal building in Oklahoma City is utterly contemptible. Although the theme is the assassination of an upper echelon of leaders, not plain citizens, the effect on the right wing militant is the same as the Turner Diaries on white supremacists. Since then, we have witnessed the sudden growth of a right wing political movement with pseudo-intellectual underpinnings and classic revolutionary fervor - the Tea Party - which has as its goal the same basic political objectives of the ideology-driven murderers in Flynn's book. Tea Party members are nonviolent protesters exercising their freedom of speech, and I support every one of them for doing so (although as a Socialist my views are directly opposed to theirs). However, it only took one Timothy McVeigh to destroy 168 lives in April 1995. Who is to say that another monster hasn't been created after reading this book?
I mentioned the Turner Diaries, which has inspired countless murders of non-white Americans since its publishing in the late 70s, because this IS the Turner Diaries for a non-racist, albeit still radical, right wing audience, among whom are certainly enough people to ensure that at least one or two lone wolves will commit violent acts against our society. Yes, this is a work of fiction, but it is a work of fiction describing what would be poetic justice to those who hold the author's ideology. I suggest that it would be a much safer idea if, instead of distributing this book to schoolchildren as one reviewer suggested, we give them each a copy of the Manifesto of 1848. Only the rare (delusional) soul believes in Communism anymore, but Flynn's proto-fascist views still enjoy widespread support.
The violence and cruelty portrayed in this book is consistently programmatic, and as uninspired as the directing in a typical low budget pornographic movie. The protagonists, if they can be called such, Congressman O'Rourke, his dad, and Coleman, show neither remorse nor any semblance of a conscience upon murdering their victims. Their resolution is that of a typical suicide bomber, blind and soulless. The fact that the plot develops into a fight between a corrupt administration and our three rebels near the end does nothing to justify the first few murders committed by the crew. Where is the humanity? Why does the author refuse to elaborate on O'Rourke and his journalist girlfriend and their life together? Do they simply spend all their time discussing politics, stabbing each other in the back and looking over their shoulders, or do they have a real relationship? I would suggest that as cold as our protagonists are toward the men they kill, O'Rourke being part of that group would not be able to keep up a romantic relationship with a mature woman who leads a fulfilled life, like his girlfriend.
My fear is that someone easily susceptible to black and white thinking will pick up this book and take it as a call to assassinate our elected representatives, possibly endangering the lives of private citizens. Vince Flynn does not deserve to be commended for this book. Surely he has his right to freedom of speech and of the press, but so do I, and I say this book is a loaded gun with the safety off pointed directly at the constitutional system we love and cherish. There is not an ounce of rationality in the book, no pang of conscience in the protagonists except the fear that they might get caught. That is lousy storytelling with no moral at the end good enough to justify it. I was disappointed when I read it in 2000, but in today's political climate, the thought of someone getting ideas from this book is terrifying.
Summary of Term LimitsTaking America back . . . one politician at a time. In one bloody night, three of Washington?s most powerful politicians are executed with surgical precision. Their assassins then deliver a shocking ultimatum to the American government: set aside partisan politics and restore power to the people. No one, they warn, is out of their reach?not even the president. A joint FBI-CIA task force reveals the killers are elite military commandos, but no one knows exactly who they are or when they will strike next. Only Michael O?Rourke, a former U.S. Marine and freshman congressman, holds a clue to the violence: a haunting incident in his own past with explosive implications for his country?s future. . . .
