Book Reviews of The 36-Hour Day, fourth edition: The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People with Alzheimer Disease, Other Dementias, and Memory Loss in Later Life, 4th EditionBook Review: I realized the Baser side of Human Nature. Human-coachroaches guised as Humans. Summary: 3 Stars
I read this book. but care for the Carer is of utmost importance. It was Woodside Queens, I was only new in New York and originally from Ireland. I looked after Peggy (Irish American) for 3 years (early to late stages of Alzheimer's) until she died . She was humored and relaxed in my company. It was because her mother was Irish and my accent was a comfort to her.
My schedule with her was happy and relaxed even though she inclined toward crumpiness, boredom and depression. I broke the day up to avoid all the pitfalls. Breakfast with I love lucy show. Shower and dress. Quiet time so her mind would not get frazzled. Walk around the block. Return to relaxing music or Irish music. She liked. Chit-chat to amuse and distract. A nap. A visit from her loyal friend which stopped her getting depressed and going into her head. Full house-keeping (she liked me busying around her house!). Summer time sit out awhile. I always let her know she was special and she liked and needed that security and it calmed her. This was a typical ay. Give, give, give, it was exactly like driving Miss Daisy.
But her daughter, Maureen O'Connor, Asst. DA Manhattan, she thought me a valuable lesson in life. Sadly I am now aware of the baser sider of Human Nature. I learnt that some humans are really human coachroaches guised as human beings. This is awful to say I know. But to be subject to, the way this "dutiful" Daughter treated me was diabolical for me to witness and objectively observe. My heart belonged looking after her Mom, so I did not let it interfere with my care for her mother. I honestly can say I cared tenderly for Peggy for years at 10 hr days with v. low pay ($335.00 pw in 1994) off the books, black market, no medical (I had a green card & US citizen). That is my own personal standard of integrity, yes it was a job, but it had to be a labor of love too, and it came naturally, because I liked Peggy. By observing this daughter ways; it emblazened on my mind the baser side human nature. And the projection of her jealously on me and even her mild hatred of me was sad and woefully corrupt to witness. My spirit, my common sense told me I belonged looking after Peggy for this chapter of my life and her life. to be cont'd !!
With regard her daughter: I am now always been careful not to let these type of women and if they have a poorly developed conscience try and use me with their agenda. I tell you honestly I tell you true to be cont'd.
