Book Reviews of The 5-Minute Face: The Quick & Easy Makeup Guide for Every WomanBook Review: Five minutes with Carmindy Summary: 4 Stars
Pros: Really good guide that covers different ages, skin colors and styles with good tips.
Cons: None really. Maybe lack of model diversity and you need to like looking at Carmindy!
The Bottom Line: I enjoyed this! While it may not be anything you couldn't find in other books, lots of valuable application tips and makeup knowledge come together nicely in this one.
Anyone who watches TLC's What Not To Wear is familiar with Carmindy the make up host and, if you're like me, has wished Carmindy and hair host Nick Arrojo would just poof into your living room and give you a stylish makeover. I guess you have to settle on the next best thing and pick up Carmindy's book!
I'm pretty much a sucker for makeup and makeup books. I noticed this book at my local Border's and flipped through it. I knew I wouldn't fork over 25 bucks on the spot (because I'm cheap like that), but I did go home and put a hold on it at my local library and impatiently waited my turn. Now that I've read it, I'll be buying my own copy.
My Review
Carmindy's book is truly a guide, moving you through with a gentle hand, covering the basics and the slightly more advanced. The book has 8 chapters with full color photos demonstrating the techniques over approximately 200 pages and they are as follows:
Introduction: Not Sure What Makeup To Wear?
A few pages of Carmindy commenting on the state of women and make up in this day and age and asking you to embrace your unique beauty and promising to help you learn how to accentuate your best features. She also gives a brief history of how she came to be a makeup artist and developed her philosophy.
Chapter One: Skin Essentials
This seems obligatory in any makeup book. It's the chapter where the book tells you about the different skin types and how to cleanse and take care of them. However, it still feels fresh here and goes further to give little extra tidbits for skin types as well as tips about the easiest way to remove mascara, exfoliating skin, applying tan and customizing your own moisturizer.
Chapter Two: Get Brows That Wow
This chapter covers getting your eyebrows under control. It has very helpful photos for technique, dispels a few common plucking myths and gives good general tips.
Chapter Three: Foundation, Concealer and Powder
It's obvious what this chapter is about! The first two chapters have primed your face to be its best and ready for makeup, now you get down to it. This chapter gives you the basic foundation, concealer and powder formulas and what skin types and coverage you're seeking that they're appropriate for. As with most of the chapters, Carmindy throws in a couple of tips or "Fast Fixes".
Chapter Four: The Five Minute Face
Here comes the chapter the book title promised us! This begins with an outline of the 5-minute plan and then precedes to break it down step-by-step. Within certain steps there are multiple application instructions for your needs, such as concealing under-eye circles as opposed to redness and blemishes.
Chapter Five: The Best Makeup For Your Skin Tone
This chapter title speaks for itself, of course. It covers many skin tones. It was nice to see that unlike a lot of make up books, it doesn't just lump African American women into one category, but shows examples of colors for a lighter and darker skinned black woman. It also includes a page for Asian and Olive (Hispanic, italian, indian and middle eastern) skin. Then you have the redheads, the Blondes and brunettes. My only problem here, and it's one I often have, is the brunette section assumes if you have dark hair, you probably have medium-toned skin. Being both Irish and Italian, I have fair skin and black hair, so I'm left wondering if the colors will still work for me.
Chapter Six: Beautiful At Every Age
This chapter explores the best ways to play up your features as you go through life. It begins with teens and goes up to your 50s, hitting every decade in between and helping you choose make-up to grow with your life and skin changes.
Chapter Seven: Special Occasion Looks
In this chapter Carmindy gives tips on how to build the 5-Minute face into looks for events such as a black-tie evening, a holiday party or even your wedding. It includes tips for those going from a day to night look, especially when you're short on time and have to leave directly from work.
Chapter Eight: Trends That Work
Less event-specific than the last chapter, here Carmindy takes you through creating the looks that have lasted for awhile such as creating that perfect smoky eye, being a bronze goddess, playing with bold jewel tones or going nude and natural.
The book ends with a shopping guide, one of my favorite things in a beauty book, where Carmindy gives you her recommendations, which are listed under each chapter they relate to.
In the end while I don't feel there's anything ground breaking about it, it's still a good make up book. The photos and the models are pretty though it might have been nice to see Carmindy do some "real life" makeovers. A bit more model diversity would have been nice also. On a side note, there's a LOT of pictures of Carmindy. About 23 of them and I'm talking full page! I guess that's neither here nor there, but something I couldn't help noticing as I went through. She is apparently very fond of the camera lens!
