Book Reviews of The 5th Horseman (Women's Murder Club)Book Review: How to Review a book with no Experience! Summary: 5 Stars
Actually there is not too much that I can say about The 5th Horseman except, if you enjoy James Patterson, you will be doubly pleased with his Women's Murder Club mysteries. I have raved incessantly about this series to all three of my daughters and they are now faithful readers(almost as much as me). We keep each other informed as to when we read about any books that will be coming out or being published shortly and we make sure not to miss a word so if one doesn't catch it. one or the other of us will. We have all come to enjoy the characters and the only time we didn't like it was when he killed off one of our favorites of the club members. I didn't think he would do that. but that seems to be the trend in series type books and TV series. Kill off someone you have grown to like a lot and make sure they possibly may do it again, and hopefully, the public will still keep coming back for more. I certainly hope there is another women's club book coming out in the near future, I know that it takes at least 6 to 8 months to expect another one, but my family and I are looking forward to the next one.
Book Review: Good, but disappointing. Save it for the beach. Summary: 3 Stars
I have been a fan of James Patterson ever since the first Alex Cross novel, but I've been really disappointed in the last few books I've read. The women in the Women's Murder Club just don't ring true to me. Their dialogue drives me crazy as it is very contrived and superficial. Nothing like the friendship between Alex Cross and Sampson where you can feel the depth of their relationship.
I also think the book moved too quickly, and Patterson didn't take the time to flesh out the characters or the crimes. Why were the patients and the escorts being killed? What was the killer's motivation? They also seem to have been caught too easily.
While the Epilogue tied up a loose end, again, there was no explanation of how Lindsay figured things out. (I don't want to be a spoiler, so I won't go into detail about that.)
While I buzzed through the book in a weekend, I wish I had saved it for the beach where I don't want to have to think too much while I read! I think I'll wait and take Patterson's next book out of the library.
Book Review: Disappointing...very Summary: 2 Stars
I have loved this series from the beginning - great characters, fun stories, thrills and romance. Very light, quick reads that are great entertainment. This story was awful. There were two mysteries. One was wrapped up so quickly it was very unrewarding, and the other was so convoluted I didn't even get it.
A comment was made that one person, when convicted, wouldn't be around to hurt anyone any more. But this person wasn't even the perp for the big mystery. And the epilogue? WHO was that person? And how did they figure it out? Too many holes for an otherwise easy read.
Finally, the characterization was off. The normal comraderie between the girls was missing. I felt no love from the original three for Yuki, in spite of her storyline. If there's a sixth story, I hope it brings back some of the magic from the earlier books. I'm giving this book two stars only because these characters are like old friends. If I had just picked up the series with this book, it would be a one. Sorry James!
Book Review: Reviews by Nan Kilar and Bobby Miller Summary: 5 Stars
Lindsay, the police lieutenant, and Claire, the medical examiner, are working the 'car' cases....young murdered women are dressed in expensive clothes and left in expensive cars. The guys (what a pair!) who are doing this and the way they murder the girls form this part of the story. Of course, Lindsay nails the killers.
Cindy, the reporter, and Yuki, the lawyer, are sitting in on a trial--a class action suit by survivors of patients who died at a major San Francisco hospital. All the patients were in for non-life threatening problems and never made it home. One doctor in particular is suspected of altering medications and causing the deaths. Lindsay gets involved in this case as well, untangles the mystery and eventually gets the culprit.
True to Mr. P's style, this is a quick, intriguing read. And, yes, his usual surprises are included. If you're a James Patterson fan, don't miss this one. The Women's Murder Club stories are getting as good as the Alex Cross stories
Book Review: Once again, a Patterson book is overhyped Summary: 3 Stars
As usual, a Maxine Paetro (with James Patterson's name attached to sell copies) is overhyped. Just check out some of the words in the front flap blurb:
SOMEBODY DIES.
APOCALYPSE NEARS.
THE 5TH HORSEMAN RIDES.
Sounds like the world is ending, doesn't it? Well it isn't. This is a standard hospital murder mystery straight out of a Robin Cook novel. The Women's murder club is at the center of it because one of their mothers dies at the hospital. One-third of this novel also covers a serial killer placing his victims in fancy cars after they have been killed. This plot-line has nothing to do with the medical murders.
Overall, this is a interesting and good book, just nothing special and nothing groundbreaking. Patterson's novels are so pedestrian and so easy to read, I just can't imagine anyone buying one. Wait for paperback or go to the library for this one. After all, if you like Patterson, you'll be reading 5 or 6 books this year.
