Book Reviews of The 6th Target (The Women's Murder Club)

Book Review: Just terrible
Summary: 1 Stars

Having read over the novel this evening I found myself extremely disappointed. Having read other James Patterson works before, I thought I was going to be getting a decent crime drama type novel.

I didn't.

What I got instead was a mess. It seemed to me to have been written by someone who understood what a story of this sort is supposed to be like without understanding what makes such a story entertaining.

Chapters come rapid fire, Amazon lists the book as 416 pages, but my copy clocks in at 386 worth of story. In the near 400 pages there are 136 chapters, averaging not even three pages per chapter.

Chapters are supposed to be commercial breaks, pauses in the action that leave the reader aching for more. The short chapters mean that there is essentially no building drama between pages.

There are three criminal plotlines in this book with nothing tying them together. They end up being worthless, meaningless filled that seems to exist solely to add pages to what would otherwise be a short and lackluster story.

I never felt any sort of emotional connection with the characters, and I never got a mental image of them. I didn't know what they were supposed to look like, how they were supposed to act, and who they were.

All I got were names and professions.

Having read the first three Women's Murder Club books in the past few years, I was vaguely familiar with the details of some of the characters.

The lovelife of the first person narrator character seemed incredibly artificial and manipulated in an attempt to add emotion and drama, but it feel incredibly short.

Overall this reads like a piece of bad fan-fiction, with an author taking someone else's characters and applying plot points in what is essentially a literary version of "paint by numbers."

It has the content of a crime drama novel, but it is written in a wooden, clumsy, ham-handed way that is detatched, clinical, and essentially emotionless.

It seems likely to me that the vast majority of the work on this novel was done by the co-author, rather than James Patterson himself. As this work seems more like the scribblings of some lackluster fan of the earlier Women;s Murder Club novels than the words of many New York Times Bestseller.

In the end 6th Target doesn't read like a James Patterson novel, it reads like someone who attempts to write in his style without producing the substance that make his works entertaining.

Summary of The 6th Target (The Women's Murder Club)

When a horrifying attack leaves one of the four members of the Women's Murder Club struggling for her life, the others fight to keep a madman behind bars before anyone else is hurt.

And Lindsay Boxer and her new partner in the San Francisco police department run flat-out to stop a series of kidnappings that has electrified the city: children are being plucked off the streets together with their nannies--but the kidnappers aren't demanding ransom. Amid uncertainty and rising panic, Lindsay juggles the possibility of a new love with an unsolvable investigation, and the knowledge that one member of the club could be on the brink of death.

And just when everything appears momentarily under control, the case takes a terrifying turn, putting an entire city in lethal danger. Lindsay must make a choice she never dreamed she'd face--with no certainty that either outcome has more than a prayer of success.
