Book Reviews of The 8th Confession (Women's Murder Club)

Book Review: As half-###ed as the cover
Summary: 2 Stars

Warning: Spoilers may be contained

When I first saw this book, I almost immediately knew that it was ethier going to be average or terrible, simply by looking at the cover. Every other WMC book has had atleast SOME kind of design put on the cover while this entry had nothing at all. It was just a big 8 slapped across a blue background and called good. If you going to make a good jacket design, atleast put some damn effort into the thing. Now for the acctual review.

The 8th Confession has the typical 2 plot scenario going on: A homeless man is murdered and Cindy feels determined to make his story into something national but after digging deep into his past, she finds out that he wasnt exactly the saint people saw him as. The other plot is just trying to find out who is going around killing high-profile celebs that dates back to the early 80s.

The entire book was to say the least, adequately boring as hell. More than half of the book was just spent having people sit around and talk or investigate, which lead to more sitting around and talking. There was also a couple sub-plots to the book, the first being romace (which will be discussed later) and another trial that Yuki is working on. The trial was almost unbelieveably annoying because every member of the jury were complete morons. They were trying to convict a woman who was seen going to her parents house late at night, supposedly killing them, and than going back home. I will list the reasons as to why this made no sense at all.

1. When she enters the house, surely she had to have made noise and turned on the lights. Im pretty sure thats its hard to manuever a somewhat unfamiliar house in the middle of the dark, especially when your trying to kill someone, again, in the dark.

2. The murder weapon was identifed as a crowbar and her parents obviously had their heads beat in by it. My question is, why did no one scream for help? I know that if someone tried to kill me than I would do everything I could to make noise. Later when they describe the scene, the mother is still alive in bed about to die and were told that the bedsheets were spread all over the place, thus heavily implying that a fight broke out. Since a fight broke out, I dont understand why they didnt scream for help or call 911. Even in the mothers dying words, she say that she saw her daughter kill her husband and try to kill her. Also on a side note theres proof that atleast 2 people saw her leave the house in a bright red car and use a toll booth shortly after her parents died.

3. Ill state this again, everyone on the jury were complete morons. Even after being given all of this proof, they still hung, twice. I really dont understand how this is probably the 5th time in the series that an idiotic jury has hung evne when presented with obvious facts as to what happened.

4. The entire "plot" becomes solved in the most unbelieveable way. The suspect, while in jail, gets into a fight between 2 other people. 1 person grabs her head, the other grabs her by the waist and they begin pulling. Apprently her inmates were so strong that they DECAPITATE HER. Who the hell was she fighting with in there? The Incredible Hulk and The Thing? Im pretty sure that its phyically impossible to do that for any human being.

Now getting back to the main 2 plots, who killed the homeless guy and who killed a group of rich people? The way the murderer killed the rich people was far-fetched in everyway. What she did was illegally import exotic snakes from Asia and then had them bite people, causing them to die from their toxins that stopped muscles, specifically your heart and lungs, and you would suffocate. The snakes used were called kraits which are a species of cobra whos venom is around 16 times more potent than a standard cobra. The book tells us that they fangs are so small that when they bite you, they leave absolutely no trace marks and the effected area doesnt swell. The venom then, once its job is done, magically disapears as well. After doing some researching, the book lies on just about everything. Nowhere did anything that I read did it mention that the fangs were too small to create such a tiny invisible bite. Nowhere did it say that the venom magically dissapears. Also from what ive read, the snakes are nonagressive and only attack if provoked. Why is it that the murderer was never bitten at all when she handled the snakes? The book never explains this and makes the entire thing far-fetched and unbelieveable.

The homless murder was just boring and wasnt really nessiccary. I wont really go into detail about it because not much was really given other than: This is who he was, this is what he did, this is who he effected. It was boring and took up too much time in this book.

Now for the romance, god was there too much of this in here. For this to be easier, ill make another list:

1. Lindsay and Joe do it around 3 times within the first 50 pages of the book and at the end become engaged
2. Cindy does it with Conklin
3. Yuki dumps her boyfriend because shes upset that shes been making out with a she-male
4. Lindsay and Cindy have a cat-fight because they both lik Conklin, regardless of the fact that Lindsay is getting married now and Cindy really had nobody.

There was just too much of it in this book for my tastes. If its there every now and than, I dont mind, but this was just overkill.

In the end, this book was terrible for the reasons listed above. The story wasnt interesting, the characters didnt act the way they normally did, and how the main murders took place was simply rediculous. I would not reccomend this book to anyone, even if you are a long time fan of the series and no longer can i reccomend Patterson for having such a terrible streak of terrible books.

Summary of The 8th Confession (Women's Murder Club)

As San Francisco's most glamorous millionaires mingle at the party of the year, someone is watching--waiting for a chance to take vengeance on Isa and Ethan Bailey, the city's most celebrated couple. Finally, the killer pinpoints the ideal moment, and it's the perfect murder. Not a trace of evidence is left behind in their glamorous home.

As Detective Lindsay Boxer investigates the high-profile murder, someone else is found brutally executed--a preacher with a message of hope for the homeless. His death nearly falls through the cracks, but when reporter Cindy Thomas hears about it, she knows the story could be huge. Probing deeper into the victim's history, she discovers he may not have been quite as saintly as everyone thought.

As the hunt for two criminals tests the limits of the Women's Murder Club, Lindsay sees sparks fly between Cindy and her partner, Detective Rich Conklin. The Women's Murder Club now faces its toughest challenge: will love destroy all that four friends have built? The exhilarating new chapter in the Women's Murder Club series, The 8th Confession serves up a double dose of speed-charged twists and shocking revelations as only James Patterson can. And remember, this is the only Murder Club episode of the year.
