Book Review: Disappointing
Summary: 2 Stars
I've been a Spider-Man collector for a long, long time and I like, but do not collect, pop-up books. I thought that this would be a very promising item. Unfortunately, it was not very well thought out or constructed. The faults I am listing here may not be the only ones. Page one, great Spidey image leaping out at you. The problem is that his right knee will want to go underneath his right arm when you close the page. If it does you will bend or tear either the knee or arm. Page two, great image of the Green Goblin, if you lean to your left. If you look at it straight on you get to see the back of his right arm, with no image on it. On to page three, Dr. Octopus. Not a great image, but the main problem here is repeated throughout the rest of the book. There are pull tabs that spiral out called Key Character Fact File. They have an image and a little info. They are also too large to spiral out to see the whole image or read the whole file. The slot it spirals from was cut too small. To see the entire file you will need to cut a larger hole. As I said this is repeated through the rest of the book. Next page featuring the Vulture is a very lame group of pop-ups and images. The next image is Electro and this is actually a pretty good page. But it is followed by Kraven the Hunter whose right arm shoots nearly straight out of the book, making it difficult to see any depth. Second to last is the Sandman and easily the worst image in the book. The pop-up is of the Sandman getting caught in the nuclear blast that caused his mutation. We see a mushroom cloud with a dark figure leaping away in front of it. There are so many better images that could have been used here and what they chose is incredibly lame. The book ends with an image of Spidey punching Mysterio across the two page spread. Another good image.
All in all, this could have been a fantastic collection of pop-up art. Instead it comes off as a cheap, poorly thought out mess.
I would not recommend it unless you absolutely have to have everything Spider-Man. I am not one of these people.
