Book Reviews of The Annotated Pride and Prejudice

Book Review: Excellent annotations
Summary: 5 Stars

The first fully annotated version, and still the best. Well researched, lots of background information. It's not expensive, and it's easy to handle for its smaller size.

The annotations are on the right sides, they can be easily ignored if the readers choose to. Maybe readers should ignore most of the annotations in their first reading of the immortal novel, as the annotator suggested.

Only one complain on the publisher: this book should be printed on better quality paper.

The Harvard version is great too, but it's for more serious readers. And it's more expensive and bigger in size.

Book Review: A Good Reference
Summary: 5 Stars

I used this book as a reference while I was reading Pride and Predjudice on my Kindle. There were way too many footnotes to read directly from this edition. I would read a few chapters on the Kindle and then skim the footnotes in this edition for the section I had just read. I think I got a lot more out of the book than if I had just read the regular version. Shapard's footnotes contained many interesting facts about the customs of the day that helped explain various characters' motivations for their actions. He also included biographical information about Jane Austen herself that was helpful.

Book Review: Enjoyable addition to P&P library
Summary: 5 Stars

If you love P&P, as I do, and have the book and the films, this will be an excellent addition to your library. It was fun to read the story, slowly, following the annotations as I went. Mr Shapard brings in all kinds of pertinent information about dress, customs, manners, idioms, locations, methods of travel and distances, psychology, etc. Many of the comments are, of course, the editor's interpretations of behavior or thought but all are reasonable.

I may not reference the book again but I am delighted to have it in my P&P collection. It is a job very well done.

Book Review: Transformative!
Summary: 4 Stars

Mr. Shapard does a fair amount of gushing, but he gets it out of his system after about a hundred pages. What's left is historical context, balanced literary interpretation and elucidation of the subject matter. Overall, he's done a wonderful job.

Years ago, I read P&P and thought it was alright but nothing worth getting excited about. When I read this version, suddenly it wasn't just two people talking; it was Darcy digging himself a hole in front of the oblivious Elizabeth. Talk about something worth getting excited about; I couldn't put it down.

Book Review: Annotated is the way to go!
Summary: 5 Stars

I never saw an annotated book before, but all I can say is that it is awesome! I had read the regular version of this book before, and while I enjoyed it immensely in its own right, the annotated version added an amazing amount of understanding and depth to that time period. So many questions that I had regarding what Jane Austin meant were explained in the notes. I would not have even bought this book if my daughter's school had not required it. What a treasure we might have missed!

I will be looking for annotated versions of other books as well!
