Book Reviews of The Art of ElectronicsBook Review: BEATS ALMOST ALL OTHER ELECTRONICS BOOKS IN ITS CLASS Summary: 5 Stars
I fully support this book per my technical background:
1. I had over 2,000 hours of USAF tech schools, from heavy ground communications to computers.
2. As a tech writer, I wrote over 400 H/W and S/W technical manuals over a period of 40 years.
With that said, you now have some measure to gauge the following "need to know" words.
What you need to know about the "Art of Electronics:"
1. It teaches like combined hands-on and classroom theory courses;
2. It's written and presented better than most of the 300 technical books in my home library;
3. It's so lucid, you only need simple math. However, I recommend first year calculus, especially if you intend to enhance your electronics expertise;
4. It covers everything from the purpose and characteristics of simple components to full bore analog and digital designs. Its extensive coverage also includes device data sheets and device-by-device comparison tables.
The "Art of Electronics" is an outstanding book from any perspective.
Enjoy!
Book Review: Essential for working engineers Summary: 5 Stars
This is a book that belongs on the desk of every working
engineer who designs electronic products. It's an
essential reference to all the "stuff I learned once
and forgot", as well as an enjoyable read. It's not going
to be much help to a student trying to study for a high-end
college course, but the truth is that nearly all of that
complex math is utterly unused out here in the trenches. The
fundamental "rules of thumb" and "bag of tricks" focus that
AofE has is exactly what we really use when designing most
of the products that people use in daily life.
Some reviewers fault the lightweight treatment of complex
topics or the simplification of certain aspects of electronics.
If that's your big concern, then a more complex and rigorous
treatment would be a better choice. If you just want to learn
about electronics, and have a good reference on your desk to
check up on things while designing, then this is it.
Book Review: crystal clear distillation of years of solid experience Summary: 5 Stars
Based on the biographical sketches of the authors, it was hard to believe that this book would have much more practical value than the typical skim-the-suface theoretical treatments that come from people with strong academic backgrounds.
This book is an exception, perhaps *the* exemplary exception to the rule.
Outstanding value, worth a spot on your reach-it-with-the-dominant-hand-without-getting-out-of-your-chair reference shelf. Whether you are a student, a freshly-minted wannabe engineer with a hole where you wish your experience lived, or an old rusty crusty know-it-all who hasn't re-invented a wheel in years, this book is a gem, and we can all learn a lot from time well-spent flipping through it. There is value here, not just in the hard/soft/firm/wet-ware nuggets that are scattered throughout, but from the clarity of expression and informal style of the textual presentation.
Buy one for a techy you love: (s)he'll love you right back for the gift.
Book Review: An Encyclopedia for a cheap Textbook price!! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the first edition and put my hand on this second edition as soon as it was published.
Each paragraph asks significant amount of time in the beginning, but it's worth it.
You'll find yourself analyzing virtually all the circuit that you come across!
My major is chemistry, but I have fixed all sorts of electronic appliances including my 27" TV, a control circuit for the huge analytical instruments that I had to operate at school, and so forth, and so forth...
Now I had two copies of the first edition, one of which became wore the age and gone. The remaining first edition has all the traces of my understanding and they're being transferred to the second edition that I have.
Of course I bought two copies of the second edition for the same purpose. You may want to sleep over it.
Just don't give up in the beginning as it reads really difficult in the first place. But it would pick up speed.
It's just amazing!!
Book Review: As already mentioned: The Electronics Bible Summary: 5 Stars
I'm an undergraduate student in physics and electronic engineering. Although it hasn't been used as a textbook in my engineering course, it was used as the textbook for both second and third year electronics courses in my physics course. At any rate, it is regarded as the "Bible" of reference texts. Be aware that it is in reality a reference - although it can be used to learn electronics, there are other books that are probably more appropriate. However, for anyone between decent electronics enthusiast and professional electronic engineer, this is an indispensable tool, and I recommend it to anyone who considers themselves in this category. It has proved its worth over and over again (I purchased my copy in 1992, and despite its 10 year age, it is still highly relevant and useful). I anticipate the next version (should there be one) with great eagerness. This is one book that I couldn't be apathetic about reviewing. BUY IT!
