Book Reviews of The Art of Manipulating Fabric

Book Review: Visuals Are Terrible but Good Info On Technique
Summary: 3 Stars

One thing I must have in any art book is visuals. The visuals should tell me most of what I need to know and the text should seal the deal. I'm an artist myself and I cannot understand why there are art books which seem to think last and least about the visuals which go into art books. I am not saying this is a bad book. If you feel like reading a lot of text and studying all white pictures demonstrating intricate sewing, this will do the job. Personally, this didn't do much for me. I have spent years painting and manipulating fabric but in a much freer style.

Book Review: Best sewing book ever!
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVE this book. I dispaired of finding anything new or interesting, but this is it! Don't just take fabric and make it into a garment (or a slipcover, or placemats, or...)--take fabric and make it into different fabric. Twist it, turn it, tuck it, pleat it, double it, gather it, this way, that way, round, square, triangular, smocking, shark's teeth, cartridge pleats: enough for anyone. This is an idea book, and now my head is so full of them they're pouring out the ends of my fingers! Fun, fun, fun. Thank you Colette Wolff.

Book Review: many ways to change your plain fabric
Summary: 5 Stars

Colette Wolff said her working objective was to catalog fabric manipulation; what they are, and what to do with a piece of cloth, and how to do it.
I make wearable art and bought the book for the many, many ideas both in photos and drawings. I want ideas to make my work distinctive.
Most of the manipulation is done with hand sewing. The diagrams are good and can be followed fairly easily. There is a section on machine quilting.
I could see combinations of designs being used in a wall hanging.

Book Review: Complete Source for Techniques
Summary: 5 Stars

All the techniques I've been wanting to learn all in one complete source. This book is awsome. I have read the other reviews and the negitive ones I have to strongly disagree with. I don't care that the pictures aren't in color or the lack of understanding is blamed on the book and not the person's own lack of ability. If you can hold a needle and thread you can use these techniques. If it's difficult to understand then please choose a different hobby. To me it's as easy as ready a McCalls pattern.

Book Review: Excellent Reference
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is a wonderful reference, although I wouldn't want to read it all the way through from cover to cover! It has wonderfully detailed pictures, and is as good for inspiration as it is for directions. It is true that most of these techniques seem geared towards interior decorating, or quilting, but with a bit of creativity, these methods can easily be used in the fashion industry as well!

All in all, it's a wonderful book, and I'm very glad to have it in my library!
