Book Reviews of The Ashley Book of KnotsBook Review: The Definitive Bible of Knots Summary: 5 Stars
This book is the indispensable, essential, must-have book of every knot a person could ever dream. I bought three other knot books before this one, believing that Ashley's book was more than I needed. Now the other three books gather dust and this one is the only book I use. It isn't just knots, either. Ashley also tells a lot of tales and lets us know what life was like when he lived, as he collected the information to put together his book. I actually read this book sometimes just for the pleasure of reading it. You don't have to be tying knots. It would be hard to imagine a book that could improve on what Ashley has put together. Simply outstanding. I love it.
Book Review: A life long companion for the knot nut - ameteur or pro Summary: 5 Stars
I bought my first copy of this GREAT book in 1945, in Honolulu while in the navy and have had a copy at my warm side ever since -- most books are read once, maybe twice, some even more BUT this one has been read by me almost daily for all these years -- I even keep an extra copy at my mother-in-law's house so I can be close while travelling -- someone should run down a member of the Ashley family descendants and tell him or her what a totally awesome job he did! There is no book on knots equal to his work -- A wonderful contribution to the nutty people who enjoy knots whether they be scout, sailor, cowboy, climber or the soccer mom who needs help with a simple bow!
Book Review: Darn fine book Summary: 5 Stars
This book is everything I hoped for! I previously purchased Graumont & Hensel's Encyclopedia of Knots, but as I did more research kept hearing about Ashley. I finally got it and it does have material about most every knot known. I would recommend it as an anchor for anyone who does fancy work, research, or uses rope on a daily basis. There are other web sites and books that have better details for tying the knots, but nobody has all of them in one place like Ashley. I would have liked to have purchased the first ed., but did not have the money and this edition does have corrections or clarifications. Anybody who buys it should be well pleased with their purchase.
Book Review: Did Mr. Ashley not understand the Sheet Bend? Summary: 4 Stars
I appreciate very much "The Ashley Book of Knots" . However, I do not agree with Mr. Ashley regarding the sheet bend. There is only one way to make a correct sheet bend and that is as No. 67 on page 16. I believe that the sheet bend evolved from the square knot and that it is actually the same knot. I further believe that the first sheet bend was made when "the early man" discovered that his square knot was no good for joining two lines or ropes with different diameters. Instead of undoing his square knot he secured its thinner loose end under it self and made a sheet bend according to No. 67.
Book Review: "I'm a bit tied up at the moment." Summary: 5 Stars
First published in 1944, THE ASHLEY BOOK OF KNOTS is a fundamental reference work for anyone who works with rope, be you a sailor, stevedore, circus acrobat or dominatrix.
Seemingly every knot in the world is presented and deconstructed, from the most prosaic bowline to intricate monkey's fists and rope buttons and fasteners.
Less practical to put aboard a boat than THE MARLINSPIKE SAILOR (due to its size and weight) ASHLEY makes a great addition to your den's bookshelf. If you are the kind of person who loves creating intricate artwork, this book will entertain and instruct you for years to come.
