Book Reviews of The Ashley Book of KnotsBook Review: THE Knot Reference Summary: 5 Stars
Simply stunning! Nearly 4,000 knots and as many illustrations fill this hefty tome. Having said this do not assume that this book is heavy going - rather the contrary - Ashley writes in a light and interesting style, interspersed with humour. Every type of knot is covered - from practical knots though decorative knots to trick knots. An assement of practicality of each knot for specific uses is also included. Add to this plenty of history, and the classification of knots by use and occupation, and this makes this book a must for anyone interested in knots. It is also handy for dipping into on rainy days!
Book Review: The Root of All Knots Summary: 5 Stars
This is the reference that seems to be used by all other knot books and web sites.
Although the book can be hard to understand when trying to tie knots, no colors, videos or animated gifs, it is quite useful when trying to identify a knot that I want to tie.
I knew what I was getting as I had read the libraries copy before making the decision to purchase so I am not at all disappointed with my book.
This is also an excellent book for reading if you enjoy tying knots.
If you have more than a passing interest in knots then you will want to consider buying this book.
Book Review: Not Just Knots,But A Whole Lot More Summary: 5 Stars
This book is a work of art and devotion. Clifford Ashley presents an encyclopedic array of knots in this book. If there's a knot you seek, you'll find it here: plain knots and fancy knots, practical knots and magical knots, beautiful and ornamental knots---they're all here. Mr.Ashley's hand drawings make these knots easy to follow. There are hundreds of beautiful pen-and-ink drawings that depict the maritime life as well:from people to places to things. Clifford Ashley's love and mastery of his subject is evident on every page. For my money, this is the best book you will ever find about the subject of knots.
Book Review: No better book on knots Summary: 5 Stars
This is THE authoritative work on knots. There is simply no better book available. Every kind of knot for every purpose is detailed along with every variation (good or bad) that you are likely to find. Includes a lot of details and stories about many of the knots and additional information on why tieing it one way might be preferrable to another. Decorative knots, occupational knots, it doesn't matter, it's here in this book. How to tie them, when to use them, when to use another knot. This book is from an expert for those who want to be an expert on the quickly disappearing art of knot tying.
Book Review: Ahsley Book of Knots is not the end all Summary: 3 Stars
I recently bought the Ashely book of knots because I thought it would tell me how to tie every knot on the planet. I found it a bit confusing because it did not use colors to illustrate the knot ties. It was hard to follow most of the knot patterns. Also it did not have climbing knots used by most rescue people. I found a great site that does animation and colors: http://www.animatedknots.com/doublefishermansrescue/index.php . Perhaps if the book came with a DVD it would be better. I know it is an old book...but come on...we have new technology now!
