Book Review: Excellent name book

When we first went for a name book, we grabbed one that promised 75,000 names. We soon realized that 75,000 names don't actually exist - it was mostly alternate spellings (and/or kre8ive spellings and/or just plain random misspellings) and random words in dozens of foreign languages, many of which the authors even admitted aren't used as names as far as they know. It only took a day or two for us to get sick of sifting through pages and pages of "names" to find only a few things we recognized as names, let alone would actually consider.
So we took that book back and searched for something better. If the store we'd been in had had "Beyond Ava and Aiden" in stock, we probably would have just grabbed that and left (I was familiar with the previous versions), but they didn't. I recognized this one from the website of the same name, whose Name Voyager I love to play with, and we flipped through it and decided to give it a try.
Overall, we're *much* happier with this book! The alternate spellings given are generally ones that are actually in use rather than random jumbles of letters, and instead of the same old definition you find everywhere, it includes information that you might actually find useful when picking a name - both a mini version of the popularity graph, and info like what common connotations are, famous people with the name, and how people tend to view the name. Imagine that! The alphabetical listing with this info only takes up about half the book, while the rest is full of themed lists. I also liked the selection of themes better than some books, which often either keep their lists to 10-20 names each, or give things like top names from every single country but not much more interesting thematically than that.
The one big change I'd make to this book is to make sure that every name that makes it into a list in the back, also gets an alphabetical entry with further information. It was a bit frustrating to find a name we liked, only to have to look it up online to get any more info about it (even how it's pronounced). There didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this, either - some names got entries despite never cracking the top 1000, while some that have been reasonably popular did not (and vice versa).
So it's not perfect, but I definitely recommend it 100% over the books that promise tens of thousands of names and provide nothing but a dictionary definition.
