Book Reviews of The Backyard Astronomer's Guide

Book Review: Stop Looking - This IS the best broad-coverage introductory book on telescopes
Summary: 5 Stars

When I become interested in a topic, I typically go looking first for a good introductory book. I'm fussy, though. I want one that is broad but not shallow, as timeless as possible without ignoring major technology and trends, well-written, and good quality from a publishing perspective. This book meets my needs on all. Astronomy, like many activities with an enthusiast audience, is flush with books that are all but worthless - compendiums of articles, volumes thrown together based on the whims and news of the moment, etc. By contrast, this is a nicely balanced book that covers virtually all major topics of interest related to telescopes and basic observing for a new amateur astronomer. Having looked through more intro books than I care to admit, I believe this is the best out there, and it's a good one. Informative and enjoyable reading.

Book Review: Practical realities of using telescopes and cameras
Summary: 5 Stars

Featuring gorgeous full-color photography, The Backyard Astronomer's Guide: Revised Edition is a thorough instructional to the exciting and educational world of stargazing, especially for the amateur astronomer. Individual chapters accessibly address facts and features about heavenly bodies, as well as the practical realities of using telescopes and cameras to stargaze, and even applying CCD cameras to capture digital records of the sky. Collaboratively written by Terence Dickinson (Astronomy Commentator for Discovery Channel Canada) and Alan Dyer (Program Producer at the Calgary Science Centre Planetarium and a Contributing Editor to "Sky & Telescope" magazine) is an excellent, practical, beautiful, adventurous, and highly recommended addition to personal, school, and community library Astronomy reference collections.

Book Review: Incredibly helpful
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't overstate how useful this book is. It covers naked-eye stargazing, binoculars, the history of amateur astronomy, telescope designs, eyepieces, accessories, setting up your new scope, the sun, moon, planets, stars, deep-sky objects, astrophotography, and just about anything else an amateur astronomer might want to know about. The reviews of telescope and eyepiece brands and models are particularly useful. I love browsing through telescope catalogs, but I also want expert advice on what brands and models are worth seeking out and which to avoid. This book delivers. The full color photographs throughout are a nice touch. The heavy paper and solid binding ensure that the book will last forever, which is good, because you'll be using it a lot.

I wish _every_ hobby had an intro book this useful.

Book Review: The amateur Astronomer's BIBLE!!!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Search no longer, everything you need to know is right here in this book.

1. Different types of scopes
2. Must have accessories.
3. Waste of time accessories
4. Recommended scopes.
5. ect, ect, ect.

It's the book that keeps on giving! Yes I also own Dickinson's "Nightwatch" and like another reviewer said, there's some repetition , which made me skeptical about buying this book, but if you already have "Nightwatch", this book goes into waaaaaaaay more depth. this is definately a must have for people who haven't purchased a scope yet and are trying to make a decision. I know how hard that decision is when you know very little about telscopes and accessories and every review you see is praising every telescope you look at. Where do you start? You start here.

Book Review: AN AMAZING, EASY READING BOOK
Summary: 5 Stars

At the beginning I was just a bit suspicious of buying "one more vulgar amateur book", but after reading it all, I can FULLY recommend to all of you this book.
Photos & edition are simply great, and reading it is a real delight. Easy language (for beginners and/or intermediate level aficionados), first hand advices, no brand-inclined suggestions or recommendations. If you know enough about astronomy (but not an expert, ok?), you can agree with them in almost all authors say. And you, southern hemisphere amateurs, are NOT out of this good reading (many books only cares for specific topics of nothern hemisphere); in fact authors point out very interesting things for us.
Please don't miss this one.
