Book Reviews of The Backyard Astronomer's Guide

Book Review: Best Book on Amateur Astronomy, Hands Down
Summary: 5 Stars

If you can only afford one book on astronomy, this is it. I've been an amateur astronomer for over 30 years, but this book still held my interest in every chapter. The authors are up to date with the equipment and procedures they talk about, and most importantly, they've used the equipment and procedures they write and talk about. They're very honest, clear and truthful about their critiques when it's crucial for a new astronomer to not lose interest because they can't understand something or some technical detail. They explain it all. I love this book! You will too! Get it!

Book Review: Best beginner book out there
Summary: 5 Stars

The Backyard Astromomers Guide has got to be the best "how to" book I've ever had the pleasure to purchase. No fluff or "I know more than you so just believe me" writing style, but good down home information and suggeastions written in a way that any aspiring beginner astronomer needs and desires. I wish this book had been written 30 yrs ago when I bought my first telescope. further, I wish more authors in other areas of expertise would take this book as a lesson in how to really help the lay person get involved in the endevour they are seeking. 5 STARS ALL THE WAY!!!

Book Review: The definitive source!
Summary: 5 Stars

I had read and heard that this book is the definitive source for backyard astronomy, and boy, were they right! Absolutely top-notch in every way. Very comprehensive, with tons of information about how the sky works, what's up there, and what equipment you need to have and how to use it. Helpfully, they "name names" and make specific suggestions for equipment to buy and equipment to avoid. Be sure to get the THIRD EDITION (2008), as lots has changed in the filed of viewing equipment since the prior releases. It's a no-brainer - buy this book.

Book Review: Absolute MUST BUY!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is absolutely the best written and most information guide I have in my library. The authors are incredibly knowledgable and share their experience in a very understandable manner. The book is very current in terms of technologies, and they've included the latest and greatest technoliges and what to do with them. I particularly like their direct approach to many topics - "While many do it this way, we don't. Here's what we do..." This book is an absolute requirement in every astronomer's library.

Book Review: 2008 Stargazer Textbook / Encyclopedia / Comsumer's Guide
Summary: 5 Stars

This newly updated version of The Backyard Astronomers Guide is up to date, relevant, and comprehensive. It is particularly useful for helping Astronomers navigate the many, many, many brands, styles, and sizes of telescopes and equipment. It will help the reader know what equipment is needed and what is unnecessary. For this reason alone it is useful. I have been involved in astronomy for quite some time and when I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down until I had finished it.
