Book Review: not bad, but not that good either
Summary: 3 Stars
Overall, this novel was OK. It's low calorie fare with enough going on that I was interested in what happens next. The peripheral characters were sterotypical and bordering on the extreme at times. The main character, Helfort, well... With a series like this, I was already expecting that he'll start off humble, but acolades would steadily be attached to him due to all the circumstances he encounters.
The only real problem I had with the story was *** SPOILER ALERT ***
* * * SPOILER ALERT * * *
In the actual Battle of the Moons of Hell, the scout ship he's on is heavily damaged to the point of being immobile. The crew is doing what you'd expect: damage control and trying to get the engines back on line. What I didn't expect is:
1) The injured were not transfered off Helfort's ship to the larger and probably, better equiped sick bays of the capital ships.
2) The little scout ship seemed to have unlimited Regen units.
3) The Admiral ordering the most of the Task Force back home as soon as the actual fighting seemed over, even while she had ships who couldn't travel in the hostile system!
4) When word came that enemy reinforcements were to arrive, the admiral didn't tell Helfort to have his crew abandon ship or even offer to shuttle them over to the capital ships. It was mentioned earlier why scout ships didn't get real names because they were lost so often in action, so why were they so adamant in getting this almost gutted one going?
5) That being said, the admiral took Helfort's "order"/suggestion to get the rest of her combat capable capital ships out of the system and leave him and his crew and their not yet functional ship to do the best they can. Where their possible futures are to be blown up in their ship or be captured and taken to the prison planet -- which was the whole point of this operation, to rescue people off the prison planet!
As, I said, other than this glaring chunk of illogic, the book is an OK read. The second novel is a bit better.
