Book Reviews of The Beatles Complete Chord SongbookBook Review: 'Sound' foundation Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent, accurate chords and lyrics.
Great price too.
Sure, there are no fingerpicking guidelines as Moley noted, but what do you expect for the price. Given the accuracy of the chords, and the keys in which the songs were played, it is very easy to use this book in combination with the actual song recordings, to work out the picking on all the goodies! A lot of the songs don't require picking anyway. Part of the fun of playing these acoustically is to work out your own arrangements of the sometimes multiple guitar parts.
This book also serves as a great 'instuction manual' for barre chords! No better way to learn them than in the context of these tunes!
If you want full picking / band arrangements, drop $$$$$ on that book (it's on amazon, forget the title now). But, this is excellent for the price and gets even better if you put a little time into listening to the songs at the sametime.
Book Review: You may want both Summary: 4 Stars
I have had the original "Beatles Complete" for years and was used to transposing the chords to a playable or singable key, or at least the key that followed the chords on the Beatles recordings. This book is already in the key you expect it in but it does not have music, just words and guitar chords. If you know how the song should sound and just need the words and chords, this is the book you want. Most of the songs are one page with guitar chords above the words, just like you would do it long hand. Not much help for someone who reads music but what guitar player does that on stage. This is also a fun book to have for sing-alongs around the campfire. Our keyboard player reads music and likes to look at the old book to get some of the patterns down and than transposes it to the key in the new book, so you may benefit by having both versions.
If all you want to do is strum and sing, this is the one you want.
Book Review: This one gets it right. Summary: 5 Stars
If you're used to getting Beatles chords from the internet, save yourself a lot of time, effort, and printing and get this book. Its format is excellent, and the fact that the original keys are used makes the song sound right from first chord. There are almost no errors in placement of chord symbols, and the chord diagrams before each song means you're going to be playing the right form of each chord listed. All that could be added to make it absolutely perfect would be the signature licks or intros, but often you can work these out from the intro chords given. I have worn this book out, figuratively. It's the best value for the buck I've ever come across. It even helps you appreciate more the creativity the Beatles showed in their songwriting. There is no way to be disappointed as long as you understand that this one if for chords and singing the lyrics; it only does that but it does it perfectly.
Book Review: Good Beatles song book Summary: 4 Stars
I gave the book only 4 stars because it's not really "Complete". There are lots of songs, but all done in chord strumming format. For example, if you want to learn to finger pick "BlackBird", you ain't gonna find out how to do it with this book. It's just chord progressions. Although, I find that fun, so there's a lot of great stuff to learn here. Also, I gave it 4 stars because you really need 3 or 4 hands to use this book! You have to have 2 hands on your guitar, then you need another hand or two to hold the dang book open. It's a thick, fat, book that keeps wanting to just close. You might put a paper weight on it to hold it open. That's really annoying. Decent book, though. I'm sure you could find how to play all these songs on line, but I bought the book just as a quick reference book so I wouldn't have to waste time searching on line.
Book Review: perfect, except for stubborn binding Summary: 5 Stars
Not unfond of the Beatles, I play/sing-along a couple of songs from this book almost everyday (usually on the piano, sometimes on the guitar), and have very few complaints (other mainly than that it is a **tch to keep this open to the right page while playing). The chords are usually right, although many of the older songs with only one or two chords per verse might require more than just chords to sound adequately good, and the book often groups chord progressions into a single chord (e.g. a line ending with E, E, E, E7, E7 may be listed only as E7); both of these shortcomings are easily overcome with a little adjustment/experimentation. Also worth mentioning is the misabecedarian placement of I am the Walrus between Her Majesty and Here Comes the Sun. The binding really is annoying - I really might finish ripping it apart and add rings.
