Book Reviews of The Beatles Complete Chord Songbook

Book Review: Strumming away with the Beatles
Summary: 5 Stars

A long-time Beatles fan and an amateur guitar strummer, I've never really tried to play these great songs. The chords for most of the songs are available in the net of course, but more often than not they are different from the ones in this book (which I trust are the original and thus "correct" ones). For example, I found the chords for Girl in the net but they just didn't feel quite right, close but not quite.
This is a great book indeed. The configuration of each chord that appears in a given song is provided right below the song's name, so you don't have to leaf through the book to find the configurations you don't know. What surprised me though is how difficult some of the chord changes are in songs that sound fairly simple, such as Yesterday or Blackbird. But that's a challenge any Beatles fan should be happy to cope with!

Book Review: Great Content; Not So Great Binding
Summary: 4 Stars

Like other reviewers have mentioned, this book doesn't stay open very well ... you will either have to put weight on it to keep it open or, in my case, bending the binding so far back as to nearly make the book fall apart.

I recently picked the guitar back up after 8-10 years absence, and this was the first book I purchased shortly thereafter. This book is great for those who like to play the Beatles' music. My wife is surprised at how many Beatles songs she actually knows. ("I didn't know they sang that one, too!").

I would recommend even given the poor size / binding. Would it have been better spiral-bound? Of course, but this book has the chords to your Beatle favorites, and if you're like me, maybe you'll find a few songs that you didn't think you liked as much, but are a joy to strum out the chords.

Book Review: Great Gift
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this chord songbook for my teenage brother, who loves the Beatles' music, and has been studying the guitar for several years. After trying to pick out Beatles tunes on his own, he was really pleased with this book. He said his guitar instructor loves it, too, and has been incorporating the book into lessons. Even my dad, who hadn't picked up a guitar for many years, was drawn back into playing when i gave my brother the book at Christmas. It's not usual to be able to please three people with one gift, so i'm very pleased with the choice! I personally don't know too much about the Beatles, so i wasn't sure if this particular book would be the best choice, but it's so large and has so many songs, that even if it's not 100% comprehensive, it definitely has enough to keep my brother busy for a couple years!

Book Review: As advertised
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is great, I've had it for years, and I recently purchased one for a friend who just started playing guitar. The book is as advertised-all of the Beatles songs with chords. I am not an expert on the Beatles discography, so they might have left one out, but there's a lot of stuff in here. Understand that if you purchase this it's not going to give you the fingerpicking for songs like Blackbird, and some of the Beatles' tunes work really great with just the chords as written...some not so much. You'd have to work really hard to create an authentic sounding version of "come together," but others like "Norwegian Wood," are easier to work out. I personally take books like this to an office supply store and have the binding cut off and replaced with a spiral binding, so they lay flat on a music stand.

Book Review: Excellent content, terrible binding
Summary: 4 Stars

The chords in this book are very accurate. However, for all you perfectionists, I have noticed one mistake - the F in the verses of "I'll Follow the Sun" should definitely be an F7. I agree with other reviewers that the binding is extremely impractical; I always end up holding the book open with my knee as I'm playing. I think I'm going to follow another reviewer's suggestion of getting it rebound with a spiral binding. If it were not for the binding, I would have given the book five stars.

The publisher really should put out a 2nd edition of this book with the following changes:

1) a heavy-duty spiral binding
2) fixing the order of the several songs that are out of alphabetical order
3) including "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love"
