Book Reviews of The Big Book of Colleges 2009 (College Prowler Guide)Book Review: Interesting, but not the best college book there is Summary: 3 Stars
Here's the thing about CollegeProwler: It's a GREAT way to go beyond ordinary college guidebooks and read actual student opinions. It's true that almost all college books do not go into much depth regarding dorm life, drug scene, food quality, nightlife, etc... so the opinions in this book can be helpful.
But if you're just beginning your college search, do not use this book. This is a good resource for those who already have their list of colleges and want to narrow it down and find out a little bit more about prospective schools. However, for those who pick this book up for the first time without knowing where they want to go, it is basically useless. There is no information on strong programs or majors; the book covers more of the social and lifestyle aspects of college. There is an academics rating for each school, but they all reiterate basically the same information: "Academics are pretty strong overall. But some professors are good, and some professors are bad."
Also, be weary of the statistics published in this book. Through my extensive research of colleges, I know for a fact that many of the acceptance rates, tuition, SAT scores, and GPAs in this book are just flat-out outdated or wrong.
Overall, CollegeProwler does a great job of shining a light on different aspects of college life, but if you're a first-timer trying to seek an overall impression of a campus without all the "juicy" info, you're best off seeking another book.
