Book Reviews of The Bighead - Unexpurgated & Illustrated EditionBook Review: A wonderfully gruesome, strange story Summary: 3 Stars
The Bighead is one disgusting, mind-numbingly gory, pornographic novel, filled with brutal rapes, agonizing deaths, and innumerable horrors. Add to that deranged characters and a bizarre plot and you've really got something here. I'm a fan of Edward Lee and I have to say this is probably one of his most extreme works, though perhaps not one of his best. Still, The Bighead entertains, and the intriguing mysteries detail that are found here will keep you interested.
In this twisted tale, two women, Charity and Jerrica, are off to the Virginia backwoods, Charity to visit her aunt and Jerrica to write a special piece on the local culture for the Washington Post. Jerrica, by the way, is an over-the-top sex and drug addicted hedonist while Charity simply cannot be sexually gratified in any way. Also heading to Virginia is profane Father Alexander, sent by the Catholic Church to reopen the menacing Wroxeter Abbey, which is haunted by two nuns with some very grotesque pastimes. Meanwhile, two yokel moonshiners, the utterly evil Tritt "Balls" Connor and his more or less willing partner Dicky are engaged in an bloodthirsty lust murder spree, resulting in flaying, disembowelments, scalping, and all manner of atrocities. And of course, you have the Bighead. Just what is the Bighead? A big, redneck, mentally retarded, rapist, cannibalistic, subhuman, whose true origins are not revealed until the end of the book.
What I like about Edward Lee's works is that despite all the violence and terror, he still manages to craft characters who, though certainly... quirky, have complex issues and problems that truly interest you and give them a whole feeling. Though Lee goes over the top in the end of the book and they lose some believably, through much of the novel their struggles will captivate and perhaps evoke your sympathy.
My major problem with The Bighead was the ending. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what is was about it that troubled me, because the entire climax was just so convoluted. As I said above, the protagonists practically change personalities, too many surprises are revealed at once, the story becomes riddled with out of place elements and incidences. It almost feels like Lee was just making it up as he went along. Spoilers: Why did Charity not help her beloved Aunt Annie when she was being torn apart? And the involvement of aliens in the whole thing? Really? And Tritt Balls being a demon I thought was just ridiculous and even took away from his character. That being said, there was something endearing about the whole wackiness, and in comparison to the rest of the book it was forgiven. I'd have to say altogether that if you like Lee, you'll probably like this. You have an idea at least of what you're in for.
