Book Reviews of The Black Ice (Harry Bosch)Book Review: i found out who i was Summary: 4 Stars
I am a Michael Connelly fan and found The Black Ice not as satisfying as his other works to some degree, but still way ahead of his competition. There was the usual brilliant writing I'm accustomed to with Connelly, but the story dragged a little more than usual in some spots. My big wish for this novel was that it skipped the romance (two different women in one week?) Still, being a Connelly apologist, they only took a couple of pages. All in all I did enjoy this mystery that took Bosch to Calexico (a California border town) and Mexacali south of the border. Recommend.
Book Review: don't worry, he's all better now Summary: 2 Stars
I was a big fan of Connelly after 2 other books (out of order) and was concerned when Black Ice fell flat for me. However, I think it really was soph. slump and Connelly has recovered nicely. It was tedious whereas his others are detailed and I decided one night I wasn't curious about anything and reading the rest felt like a chore. And that is a rare statment for me: I am the one everyone makes fun of for reading so much and for needing reading like breathing.
Skip this and go to other Connellys, especially The Narrows.
Book Review: Disappointing, lacks depth, and a slow read Summary: 2 Stars
The Black Ice is the one you can leave off of the Harry Bosch "must read" list. The book was a chore to read, and at times, I contemplated giving up on it. It lacks any real plot or character depth. Even Bosch is not as problematic or interesting in this novel. After a slow, laborious attempt at a dual-homicide plot synthesis, the book rushes through at the end only to fall flat. I love most of Connelly's Bosch and non-Bosch books, but this is the worse of the lot. Instead, read The Black Echo if you crave vintage Bosch.
Book Review: SECOND HARRY BOSCH Summary: 5 Stars
I said in my review of the first Bosch book that I couldn't wait for the second. If they are all like the first two, what a series! THE BLACK ICE is a great mystery and once again, Bosch is struggling with the accusations of the past. The death of police officer Cal Moore pulls Harry into the chase for an answer. Bosch is such a great detective and we get to follow clue by clue. Thank you , Michael Connelly for this detective. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED in this genre. Bring on the third book.
Book Review: Harry Bosch - the anti-hero... Summary: 4 Stars
The Black Ice is a good, solid police thriller. Connelly writes convincingly of the inside machinations of the police force and the story line is believable. I like that his characters have `character flaws' and the good guys are not all good. His tough guy, always bordering on getting canned protagonist, Harry Bosch, is as rough and tumble, smart, and raw as they come. Bring on more Harry! I'm ready for the next in the series.
