Book Reviews of The Bone Garden: A Novel

Book Review: West End Reaper
Summary: 5 Stars

Another suspenseful page turner by Tess Gerritsen. After reading four of her novels, you'd think I'd know her formula by now, but I don't. A surgeon in "real life," the author is knowledgeable about human anatomy and medical history, both of which combine to educate the reader. On top of the powerful suspense, Gerritsen throws in a well-known character, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and some medical terminology and history (think Semmelweis and the germ theory). I still shudder when I recall her descriptions of lice leaving a dead body; this lady knows her stuff.

Then there's the fact that she knows how to masterfully put together a thrilling story that has the reader eager to find out what's next and yet feeling almost afraid to find out. Who "done it?" Was it one of the esteemed doctors? Was it Norris Marshall? Should dimwitted Billy be a suspect? And about that tiny baby, why is she at the center of these grisly events? And what does Julia Hamill have to do with the story? This is a must-read for Gerritsen fans and a great introduction to her work for those who are looking for a thriller.

Book Review: I could not put it down!
Summary: 5 Stars

I got Tess Gerritsen's The Bone Garden at work from a colleague. I'd never read Tess Gerritsen before but I was looking for a new author and the story overview on the dustcover sounded pretty good. When I first started reading, I was apprehensive since I generally don't like stories that jump back-and-forth from the past to the present...especially 150+ years in the past. However, I was pleasantly surprised...I loved it and had trouble putting it down. Julia, one of the present day main characters, discovers a very old skeleton in the garden of her new home. She is intrigued and sets out to discover who this woman was. The story of Rose Connelly, one of the main characters from the past, starts to unfold in a series of letters written to a former owner of Julia's new home. This is a well written "whodunit" with the right amount of suspense, historical detail, and romance. I will definitely be reading Tess Gerritsen again.

Book Review: Book Is Very- Scientificly Written!
Summary: 5 Stars

Having been an addicted reader of the " True Crime Series"- such as Ann Rule. And then Patricia Cornwell- I then moved on to JD Robb & the " Eve Dallas Series" ( a totally different type of Crime & Mystery ( Futuristic). I was very hesitant as to how I would react to this type of Book. But I must admit- I now own all of Robb's Dallas Series.
This Book was one of the first for me by TESS GERRISTEN- I admit I started the book and found it to be " A Test of Knowledge of not only Forensics - but also the Govt. Agencies- Involved In These Cases." But now, after having read several of her Books- " She keeps you on your toes- almost like you would be Tested- at the end.. Be sure as the Reader- the Inititals of these Agencies do not take away the interest in her superb ability.

Book Review: Excellent historical mystery
Summary: 5 Stars

Gerritsen's book, The Bone Garden, is an excellent departure from his Rizzoli-Isles books (Maura Isles does make a very small appearance at the beginning of the book). It moves from the present back to the 1830s, in Boston. The description of life in Boston in the 1830s, with the focus on life in hospitals and medical schools, is excellent, evoking the time period. The characters are well-drawn and believable.

There are several mysteries within mysteries. I agree that the wrap-up of one of the mysteries is not done well (too quickly, not enough motivation, not all loose ends cut off), but nonetheless, that fault is not enough to ruin an otherwise excellent book.

I'd love to see Gerritsen write more mysteries set in this period.

Book Review: I borrowed this book from the library which makes me happy I didn't waste ny moneyon such an ugly story.
Summary: 1 Stars

I had hopes at the start of Bone Garden that this would be an interesting plot line, but was quickly disappointed{to bad the story didn't move as fast as my disappointment}. The subplot revolves around medical students that see a lot of sickness, pain and death which is vividly described in griesome overkill detail, being a person with a weak stomach I had difficulty with more then one passage. The characters from the past don't have a happy ending, and the characters in the present have an extremely lackluster ending and doesn't make sense. When you read a book you shouldn't say "And?"
At least I didn't purchase the book and I managed not to be physically ill, that is something.
