Book Review: Difficult to read this book to the end

Forcing myself to finish this book for my book club, I am curious about our upcoming discussion since I've heard many positive comments. As a school librarian, I immediately decided it was not written was in a style I enjoyed, but wrote that off to the author's desire to pull in YA readers. Then I began to be aware that there might be parents who would not appreciate some of the off-color language presented to their children. Whereas I normally enjoy the use of figures of speech, it became annoying how frequently the author used metaphors and similes with regard to death -- they were used ad infinitum. Knowledge of history was an important ingredient in understanding the content. I question that this book should have been published for the YA level. It hovered between youth and adult fiction too frequently to be enjoyed by this reader. I called my friend who purchased the book for her granddaughter to say that she might want to read it before giving it as a gift.
Summary of The Book Thief
It?s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak?s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can?t resist?books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.
This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.
