Book Review: Boring story + poorly developed characters + vulgar sex = YECH

I was extremely disappointed with this book. It's way too long, for one thing, and very repetitive. It felt like a very boring history lesson with some really crude, vulgar sex thrown in. I felt like she took a straight historical novel and stuck a sex scene every 50 pages or so. The sex stuff reads like a really bad porn movie. It's not at all romantic or erotic. I ended up skipping over those scenes after the first two. It's just irritating and actually sort of revolting to read, and I'm not a prude - it just didn't fit the story at all, nor did the frequent use of the f-word. I just find it hard to believe a husband and wife would talk that way to each other, or women discuss sex in that way, in that era. Just did not work for me at all. The kidnapping thing halfway through the book did not work either. It seemed entirely unnecesary and I wondered if it was suggested by an overzealous editor to "spice" things up.
I also felt the character development was poor, but I've thought that about Small's characters in other books too. I think it's just a weakness of hers. I also think she needs to dial back the pornographic sex. She's the only "romance" author I can think of who regularly includes anal sex in her books. I sometimes find her descriptions of sex too clinical, and she doesn't seem to understand that less can be more, but that's another weakness of hers, in my opinion. And I have to admit that sometimes it doesn't bother me, but the sex needs to fit the story. It doesn't fit here.
I've read other books by this author that I have enjoyed very much, and that's part of why this one is such a bummer. She seems rather hit and miss, not a really consistent writer. I'm not sure if, as another reviewer suggests, she needed to crank this and the other books in the series out because she had a contract to fulfill. I have seen other romance authors fall into that trap and become unreadable. It's a shame that they sometimes have to do this to make a living. It's a waste of talent. I do think Small has a certain talent. She's not the best writer (I agree that sometimes her descriptions of domestic life are excessive, but sometimes I like them) but some of her books (The Kadin and a couple of others) are really entertaining. Not this one, though. I'm glad I did not pay for it (got it from my book swap) and it will go back into the swap directly. I won't be reading much more from this author unless she comes up with something of better quality.
