Book Reviews of The Bourne LegacyBook Review: There are problems, but..... Summary: 3 Stars
Let me say first, the only Ludlum books I've read are the Bourne series and I only read them because I liked the movies. Second, the whole spy genre is not my thing, I am more of a sci/fi fan. All that being said, I really like the Bourne series and was glad to see the estate had commissioned someone to carry on the series. I didn't like the fact that Mo and Alex were killed off, I thought it was unnecessary. The only purpose this served was to "tick" the DCI off, but there had to be a better way to do that. At one point the DDCI Lindros even says that he didn't think Bourne did it, because according to the files Conklin and Bourne had a history and were friends. The DCI dismisses it almost jealously. Side note, how were the Bourne files so readily accessible, three people had to give authorization; Conklin, Panov, and McCallister. The murder set up was lame: Bourne wouldn't have left prints or his gun at the scene and would have known if his own gun was gone. It doesn't bother me that Marie wasn't involved in the plot, I don't like the character very much. The time line in this book is what bothered me the most, that and the fact that Cactus didn't do his passports. If Ultimatum, my favorite of the original three, took place 13 years after Identity, my second fav, and Bourne was 55 and Jamie is 5, since Jamie turns 11 in this one that makes Bourne 61. C'mon he couldn't pull all this off, his body wouldn't handle it no matter what how he'd stayed in shape. You also get the feeling that Bourne still works for the Agency, which we know isn't the case. All that being said, the book is a good read and adds to the series if you take the book for what it is, a restart of the series. Ludlum wasn't going to write anymore Bourne books. He tied all the loose ends up in "Ultimatum". EVL just suspended time in his book which allows the character to continue having adventures by making him seem ageless, and the missions more back to back, ala Bond. I like all the parts of Bourne's past that were added, they made the character more well rounded to me and more human. As far as the torture scenes being graphic, well maybe I've watched to many horror movies, because I don't think they're graphic at all. People have said the escapes are unbelievable and the things Bourne and Khan do make them seem more than human, again have you ever read any of the Bond books or seen any of the Bond movies. It's a book. You read books or watch movies for escapist reasons, you want the main characters to be bigger than life and do things you wish you could do. If you read fiction and expect realistic situations, well you might want to start reading non-fiction. EVL is 2/3 of the way through with his second Bourne book, scheduled to be released in 2007 to once again coincide with the release of a Bourne movie. Let's hope he finds his stride in this one and does a little better job, although this is a decent book. King's "Dark Tower" series didn't find it's stride until the second installment, even though the first book was also a decent book. He has to get used to the character. Remember he didn't develop Bourne. It's like an actor taking over a recurring character, they have to find their voice while incoporating parts of the previous actors portrayl. I expect the next book to feel like a movie, also though. It just happens once a series of books become movies that all future books have that feel and become very descriptive. J.K. did it with the "Potter" books, by book four you could tell she was writing them with the movie in mind. Ienjoyed te book and would like to say "Thank You" EVL for taking on the Bourne series, I know they'll just get better as you allow your Bourne to develop.
Summary of The Bourne LegacyOnce, Jason Bourne was notorious in the clandestine world of covert-ops as one of the CIA's most expert international killers for hire. Out of the ashes of his violent past he's emerged today as a Georgetown professor, living a quiet life, retired from danger-until he narrowly escapes the bullet of a faceless assassin. And when two of Bourne's closest associates are murdered, Bourne knows that his legacy has followed him-and set him up as prime suspect for the brutal crimes.
The quicksand of lies and betrayals is deeper than Bourne ever imagined. Hunted by the CIA as a dangerous rogue agent, he has only one option to stay alive-and one last chance to stay one step ahead of an unseen assailant whose vengeance is personal. Pursued across the globe, Bourne's on the run, and on the edge of discovering the truth-that he's become the expendable pawn in an international terrorist plot. One that's taking every living witness with it and plunging Bourne one step closer to the world-shattering consequences of...
