Book Reviews of The Bread Bible

Book Review: Truly Worthwhile
Summary: 5 Stars

Rose does a fabulous job explaining exactly how to bake bread. Each recipe details ingredients by both weight and volume. The recipies are divided into high-level steps. At each step, Rose first tells you what the goal of the step is (i.e. "shape the loaf") and then gives details instructions on how to do it. Once you've made a recipe, you only need to read high-level steps the next time. You'll also appreciate how Rose gives hints for success, including pointers about how you can make a long bread-rising schedule fit to your schedule - you can shape, rise, and bake the bread when it is convienent for you, not the bread.

The cinnamon-raisin-swirl bread is heavenly! I've learned how I can bake bread over several evenings instead of needing to be home all day long. Thanks Rose!

Book Review: Trust only the negative reviews!
Summary: 1 Stars

I have been baking bread for 35 years. This is the worst book I have ever encountered in teaching one to bake bread. I'm guessing that the postive reviews were written by person or persons who will gain from the sale of this book. Although I'm sure the author is a perfectly lovely person, every negative review is right on the money. The only bread that I have made reasonably successfully from this book are breads that I already was able to make without this book. I have a number of bread baking books, every single one which is better than this one. Please don't waste your money. The pictures are to die for but your bread will not turn out that way. My last loaf I attempted from this book turned out so bad that it went straight into the garbage and I spent 24 hours making it.

Book Review: Not for Beginning Bakers
Summary: 3 Stars

I am a casual baker, people will actually eat & enjoy what I cook, and I watch the Food Network a lot, find it easy to pick up new techniques and use what I learn. However, 'The Bread Bible' was not the easiest book in the world for me. The quick, non-yeast breads were the only thing in there I felt confident enough to try as it seemed as though every yeast bread involved making something called a 'sponge' ahead of time.

If you're looking for new artisan breads to try out, or if you are an experienced and confident baker, then I highly recommend the 'Bread Bible'. But if you're looking for just a plain, simple loaf of white or whole wheat bread, look elsewhere - because this bible was sorely lacking in that department.

Book Review: Best Bread Book For Those Not In A Hurry!
Summary: 5 Stars

I read all the reviews before purchasing this book so I was somewhat prepared for the lengthy instructions. I love the book and have since bought all of Rose's other books! I certainly agree that one should read the instructions from beginning to end, digest them and then re-read before starting any given recipe. Yes, it is time consuming. It also makes things easier if one purchases the utensils, ingredients and pans, that Rose uses. It can be a bit costly. Most of my loaves have been greatly succesful, however do get the list of book corrections from Rose's website before you make your first loaf. I much prefer Rose's Bread Bible over Peter Reinharts The Bread Baker's Apprentice, which I own, or his Crust & Crumb.

Book Review: Thank you Rose! You allowed me to FINALLY enjoy what I baked!
Summary: 5 Stars

I haven't bought this book - I borrowed it from the library - but I have been moved to write about it here because it was the only book that taught me how to bake bread! If you have been struggling with bread, doing everything the recipe says and it still is not working well and you've considered going to a class just to understand where you've gone wrong? Then GET. THIS. BOOK! I only made one recipe (the white bread) but that one recipe made me FINALLY realise what dough is supposed to look like when it is really done. I now follow my own fancy in making bread - I don't measure, I don't do sponges or anything too time consuming, but now I just KNOW how to make bread. Thanks very much Rose Levy Beranbaum!!
