Book Review: The Bible of Breast Reconstruction
Summary: 5 Stars
Kathy Steligo's writing style is upbeat and UNBIASED. She spells out the facts in language everyone can understand,(Even us nurses who become patients!). I have had 2 abnormal breast issues over a 3 year period. Diagnosed w/ IDC(L breast), small and early-visible only on MRI on my 44th birthday 2008-yes REALLY! Found after participating in a heavy surveillance program. Heavy surveillance program justified after ADH removed. ADH picked up in 2006 in the R breast....and that was my first 41 yr old screening mammo.....It was motivated by a 13 yr older older sister's d(x) and treatment for DCIS. I AM the early detection posterchild! Nonetheless, there remains (today) still no prevention. Last year I visited many options: genetic testing(Me: BRCA neg), my reconstruction consult left me feeling mildly ambivalent about implants. I ended up doing lumpectomy and rads in 2008. Nonetheless...I was pretty sure I ultimately didn't want to keep my ducts and lobules. I was fortunate to have the time to read, study, contemplate, pray and PREPARE for this journey. And I'm SO grateful. This book was provided by a wonderful local (for me) plastic/recon surgeon named Michel Saint-Cyr. This book, and divine intervention helped me make many very well thought out decisions that I do NOT regret. Most recently(September 2009) I am absolutely ELATED w/my new breasts which have been adopted from my abdomen via DIEP! I learned later(after putting 2 and 2 together) Kathy Steligo and I had the same phenomenal recon surgeon(Dr.DellaCroce). I am eternally grateful for EVERYONE who has been w/ me on this journey!
