Book Reviews of The Bronze Bow

Book Review: Captivating story
Summary: 5 Stars

I previewed this book before providing it to my son, and found it really captivating. Many other reviews describe the plot, so I'll simply say that the characters are truly human and that the setting is truly brought to life. Even though I have read and studied the Bible for years, this novel brought to life things I had never understood. It truly gave context to the hatred the Jews held for their Roman oppressors, and gave me new insights - all in the midst of a great story - into Jesus' ministry being centered around Galilee, where the hatred of Rome ran deepest and the Zealot movement had its greatest sway.

As to age-appropriateness, I would say this is best for kids 10-11 and up, and would also be enjoyable for adults. Younger readers would need some guidance through parts of it.

For adults who enjoy this sort of book, I would highly recommend Fishers of Men (Kingdom and the Crown I) by Gerald Lund. Lund's story is excellently told, thoroughly captivating and provides insights on Jesus' ministry that'll really make you think.

Book Review: Review of Bronze Bow
Summary: 5 Stars

Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare
Houghton Mifflin Co

Act like a rock, if you don't want to be shot, if you like adventure, and suspense,Bronze Bow is the book for you. This fiction is great,It takes place during the Roman Empire and not knowing what's around the corner this is the book for you.

Daniel is a boy who ran away from his Blacksmith master and lives on the mountain. Daniel is a village kid. But living on the mountain he learns to survive on his own. Rosh is the leader. Joel is a boy who with his sister Theaface goes up on the mountain for a holiday. Joel is an old friend of Daniel that's why he goes with him. Joel joins Daniel on his adventure for Rosh. Rosh is a famous bandit. They also find a big slave they call Samson, he's HUGE !
This is a definite page turner. I recommend that you read this book it's great for people who like fiction with a lot of action. It's really mysterious. Do Rosh and his crew go after the Romans. Read the book to find out.

Book Review: Very offensive material to Jewish people.
Summary: 2 Stars

The premise of the story is that Jewish people have been looking in the wrong direction. Jews need to follow Jesus otherwise they are materialistic and full of vengeance. All the characters (of course they are Jewish) who accept Jesus are loving. Those who do not are narrowminded, mean, and self-centered. Throughout the book, the author belittles Judaism, while at the same time, never really explains Judaism. Does the author have any real knowledge about Judaism? How can she criticize a religion if she does not understand its beliefs or practices? Many of the comments I have read come from school age children. This book promotes one religion over another and should not be used for instruction in the public schools. There are many books that teach concepts of love and peacefulness without getting into religious material. The religious nauture of this book offends me. If my children were required to read this book, I would be furious.

Book Review: I have never forgotten
Summary: 5 Stars

When I was in seventh grade we read books to earn points to win prizes. Now, almost seven years ago, there are few books that I remember reading then. However, there is one book that has never escaped my memory. I purposely searched for this book on the web. The story of a powerful hate turned to the realization that love is the stronger of all emotions and more powerful than all feelings. Suffering is something each person must face at some point in their life, and the outcome of their sufferings is what they have learned. I place The Bronze Bow highly. It is not so well known as other books such as Ben-Hur, but should be considered among it's equals. This book teaches and feels. It is a wonderful and beautiful telling of tragic losses and even greater gains through God. Every heart should know such examples of God's love and mercy. The story is fiction, yet it is true.
