Book Review: Disappointing ending to a decent book.....
Summary: 3 Stars
First off, let me say I am a huge Bertrice Small fan, especially of her books "Adora" and "The Kadin" which I would definitely recommend. This was a pretty good book, up until the ending. I'm not going to recap it, because there are reviews that do it much better than I could. Let me just say that it has no relation that I can tell to the first two books in the series, "A Dangerous Love" and "The Border Lord's Bride" besides the location in Scotland. Even the time period is different. I found the book pretty good throughout the first two thirds, if a bit predictable. If you've read any of Ms. Small's recent works, you will feel like you've been there, done that before.
However, my big issue is with the ending. The last hundred pages of the book will make you feel like "what the heck happened here?" It's completely unbelievable for the time period, and the ending feels like something out of a contemporary fiction, not something people of the time period would actually do and say. Plus, the characters act completely unlike themselves. Then the ending takes all these weird side stories and ties them all up in about ten pages, which all feels way to neat and orderly, considering the mess than had been happening. After it ended, I sat there for a few minutes just stunned at how badly the ending was written. I am starting to wonder if Ms. Small isn't using a ghost writer to pump out books way too quickly. I keep hoping she will get back to her old standard of excellence, but I am continually disappointed.
