Book Reviews of The ChaseBook Review: Gripping! Historical San Francisco in 1906 Summary: 5 Stars
The beginning of a book to me is the most important, it must grab the reader when they are at their most vunerable. You know the time when you've finished an outstanding book and dread the thought of having to move on to something you are not quite sure will be as good. This is the book! Gripping from page one, to the last word. This book is the Maxwell House of novels. This is my first review and I'm no writer so bear with me. I really don't know what to say but that I loved this book. It was not even a genre I ever read! That is what shocked me, that I could be so interested in a book that was not my normal read.
All I can say is it was very interesting historically, and very exciting. I hope you'll try it.
Book Review: Not your typical Cussler thriller, but still fun! Summary: 4 Stars
This one is a bit different thAn the typical Dick Pitt adventure but still a lot of fun. This one starts out with the recovery of an old steam locomotive from the bottom of a lake in the 1950's and in it are three dead men from years earlier. The book then flashes back to the old west and the 24 month crime spree of the bank robber the Butcher Bandit. This guy is really bad! He has killed many men and woman and even children. After the butcher Is private investigator Isaac Bell who has been hired by the US government to put an end to the butcher's evil run. This is kind of a mixture of Cussler's typical thriller adventure with an old west dime novel, and it all makes for a page turning, enjoyable read.
Book Review: Great Read Summary: 5 Stars
I've just started reading Cussler novels and have enjoyed them immensely. The Chase is the first with new protagonist, Isaac Bell. I picked up the second in the series (three books with Isaac Bell have been written/published so far), The Wrecker, at an airport in between flights and could not put it down. Once I finished The Wrecker, I immediately ordered The Chase and, like the Wrecker, it is a great book, and a very fast read. I hate to put it down, but also don't want to go through it too quickly because it's such a fun book. Cussler has been writing for over 30 years now, so I have a lot of catching up to do, but I highly recommend this and any of his other novels.
Book Review: An enjoyable departure Summary: 4 Stars
As a long-time fan of the Dirk Pitt and Kurt Austin books from Cussler, I was a bit unsure as to how I would feel about this book. Would it be a nice departure from the norm or simply a way to leverage his fan base while providing him with a financial boost? While the latter is true, the former clearly is as well. The Chase was a very enjoyable historical novel. The characters felt real and the story was entertaining and well paced. In the end, I was glad that I finally got around to giving this wok a shot. I still look forward to the next adventure of Pitt or Austin, but this was a good respite from the action-fantasy genre that has been Cussler's strong suit.
Book Review: Lacked the usual Cussler adventure Summary: 3 Stars
Distinctively different from previous Cussler books which give a glimpse at the past and proceed with a modern day adventure. The chase puts the cart before the horse and centers the entire book around a past event. Other reviewers have expressed displeasure at the inaccuracies of the book. The have a point, to an extent but then again this is not a history book to be praised for its accuracy. Either way, the book is somewhat slow in parts and lacks the great adventure and consistent quipping that are found in other Cussler books. Despite this, it is an interesting piece which is closer in historical accuracy that Crichton's Great Train Robbery.
