Book Reviews of The Children of Men

Book Review: The importance of being a baby
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an excellent sci-fi film in an age and genre full of computurized plots and gizmos. It emphasizes the importance of man (after all, without him what is it all for?) and yet his vulnerability. It depicts an age in which babies are a thing of the past, until one girl turns up pregnant. She becomes the focul point of a struggle that is fast-paced and yet thougtful. You can't relax during this film and you can't help thinking what if. Enhanced with Good performances by all.

Book Review: If you haven't seen the movie...
Summary: 3 Stars

This book does well as a stand-alone. I saw the movie and liked it so I thought I should read the book. My daughter read it first and was angry that the movie and the book were so different.
Knowing that before I began reading helped me to separate the two and by doing that I was able to appreciate the book as much as I did the movie. The story and characters were able to keep my interest and sympathies going, though the beginning takes off slowly.

Book Review: Not What I Expected
Summary: 3 Stars

This book was very different than I had expected, but I'm glad I read it. As other reviewers have pointed out, the beginning seemed to drag and the main character was extremely difficult to connect with. It seemed hard to grasp that the world could have backslidden into such a mess in so short a time. Still, the concept behind the book was fascinating and fodder for some deep discussions. Just don't watch the movie... it ruins the whole thing!

Book Review: Depressing, yet true, future
Summary: 5 Stars

I like the way PD James takes the readers to see the future England without the usual hi-tech, not relevant part of it. The story is a fascinating view of the humans society in England following 25 years of infertility. The story is the notes of an historian that along side the story also tells the reader his life story. I liked it very much also because the book will keep you thinking about even after you finished reading it.

Book Review: Pretty good
Summary: 4 Stars

I thought this book was pretty good. It was written very well but I felt like the end was a little rushed and it began to come undone a little bit. I really want to see the movie but it looks like I'll have to wait for DVD. I would rather rate it about a 3 1/2 but I rounded up since I felt it was well written.
