The City of Ember
The City of Ember is about a girl named Lina and a boy named Doon, who live in a city called Ember. The lights go out all the time, and there isn't much to eat. One day, Granny (Lina's grandma) finds a box with papers. Poppy (Lina's little sister) is very curious, and eats up the papers!!! Now Lina has to put the scraps of paper together. Maybe she can get a little help, but who will help her? Lina invites Clary,(the greenhouse keeper) over to her house to help her. Clary keycodes a word that Lina had been mistaking all along! She then, invites Doon, who works in the pipeworks over. Lina and Doon work together to find out the message. Lina thinks it is instructions out of Ember, and Doon thinks it is just paper. Who will be right? Will they get out of Ember? Read to find out!!!
I liked this book, because it had a lot of wondering and adventure in it. The City of Ember is a great book for anyone who wants excitment in their life! If you like The City of Ember, read the whole series by Jeanne Du Prau. I hope you like this book as much as I did!!!

Book Review: Well Written Summary: 4 Stars
I don't always read the books my kids read. I don't have time. They read so much and I have my own very long to-read list. But I found "The City of Ember" last summer at a used book store and my eight-year-old son wanted to read it. I hadn't heard much about it and decided that I wanted to read it first.
I found it to be a well written, delightful tale. It's the story of a socialistic city that is lit only by light bulbs. Two hundred years after the builders created the city, the store houses are running on empty and the light bulbs are running out. The people are beginning to panic and the leaders are corrupt. Two young kids discover the secret to saving their city.
I thought it was interesting and realistic that after over two hundred years in the city, the society had experienced few if any advancements. Socialism does not beget ingenuity or creativity.
I was disappointed that it is the first in a series. I enjoyed it, but not necessarily enough to continue reading the sequels. I let my son read it. He did enjoy it.
Book Review: Light on Substance Summary: 3 Stars
This is the first book in the Ember series. It is set in a city (Ember) that has no natural light and is fast breaking down and running out of resources. In particular, the electricity is breaking down and the city is terrified that everyone will be plunged into permanent darkness. Two smart, creative kids stumble across a set of tattered "Instructions" that they believe will help them find a way out of Ember and enable them to save everyone. I liked this book and will definitely read the remaining books in the series but, unlike some other young adult books that I have enjoyed, I thought this one was a little light on substance in terms of how the plot developed. The premise is very original and interesting but, given the enormity of the problems facing Ember, I thought that the "solution" was found just a little too easily by Lina and Doon. Of course, nothing is entirely resolved by the end of the book so maybe things will become a little more complicated as the series progresses.
Book Review: Maybe more for adults? Summary: 4 Stars
I see that most of the bad reviews are from kids -- which is who the book is targeted for. I will make a note not to use it in class. I went into this book already hearing bad reviews from adults. I have never read The Giver, but I have heard others say it is like that.
I tend to like young adult novels, and this is one I did enjoy. I really wanted to know what was going to happen -- and I plan on reading the next books in the series to know what's going to happen to them and why they went down there in the first place. I found parts of the book thought-provoking -- when the two main characters are able to see their city from the outside and realize where they just came from; and the book that they found at the pool's edge written by a woman that went into the city in the beginning -- the idea that babies were put in there so that they will not miss what they don't know about. I'm intrigued...and that's what I like to be when I'm reading a book.
