Book Reviews of The City of Ember (Books of Ember)Book Review: Lily's Book Review Summary: 5 Stars
The City of Ember is about Lina and Doon who live in the underground city called Ember.
Lina lives with her grandma and her little sister Poppy above her grandmas shop. Doon lives with his dad also above his dad's shop. Lina and Doon had barely even known each other until this one thing:
Ember is running out of supplies. They're running out of food. The lights are going out. Lina and Doon try and figure out a way out of Ember. Will they? Will they have enough supplies? Does someone know where supplies are? Is anyone hiding secrets? You will have to read the book to find out.
I really like this book and recommend it. It makes me feel all sort of different ways: happy, sad, scared.
I like it because of the mystery. The book really makes you think and gets your mind going. I really like this book. You will get really excited when you read it. You should read it!
I can't wait until I read the 2nd one!!!!:}
Book Review: Great Story Summary: 5 Stars
I am older than the target audience of this book, but I decided to read it when I saw the preview for the movie one day on TV. Like Harry Potter, the series can be enjoyed by adults as well.
The book was well done I thought, as was the movie. The movie did differ some from the book, but both were good.
Ember is a city were it is always night and nothing seems to be beyond it. The two main characters make a discovery that leads them to find a way out of the city to the outside world. Along the way, readers learn a lot about people living under difficult circumstances - Ember's electric power is about to totally fail, and they are running out of everything.
Why are these people there? Well, that would give too much away. Read it and find out.
A quick and interesting read for adults. Might be a bit much for some children in spots.
Book Review: A good read for all ages! Summary: 4 Stars
I watched the movie a while ago and thought it was a good family film. It left me thinking about how much better the book must be. I was not disappointed. It's a very easy read and is directed towards young kids, but I think it's also a good book for all those people who have enjoyed other fantasy/science fiction books (i.e. Harry Potter, Lemony Snickets, etc).
For younger readers I think the book encourages thinking outside the box and dreaming of grander things in life. For adults and teens I think it's a great escape into the world of Lina and Doon. I also believe it's made me appreciate the little things in life that are so often forgotten (i.e. thank goodness for flashlights. lol).
I'm already thinking about how much fun it would be to read this book aloud with my nephews; I can't wait to introduce them to the series.
Book Review: The City of Ember Summary: 4 Stars
Gripping is the word I would use for this fascinating story. Duprau brilliantly reflects a tale of two young friends, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, who live in an underground city called ember, which was built only to last 200 years. now, 43 years overdue, the city of Ember is aged and run-down. The supplies meant to last 200 years are diminishing and the precious electricity is beginning to fail. Then one day Lina finds a mysterious faded document called the Instructions to Egress. Will Lina and Doon Be able to solve the mystery of the instructions and save the Emberites? Or will their precious light go out for good consuming Ember in darkness?
This book is for anybody who thinks friendship and family are important, or for anybody who just likes a good adventure. Readers will be tearing themselves apart waiting to read more from Jeanne Duprau!
Book Review: A "The Giver' Fan Summary: 3 Stars
I am a fan of the book "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, and the two books that come after it, "Gathering Blue", and "The Messenger". They are all set in societies in the future, much like the City of Ember, and I was told I would like this series as well.
I didn't like it nearly as much, and here is why: They seemed contrived, and less creative. The baby in the story was not baby-like, it was the baby from a series of unfortunate events. It didn't act like a REAL baby. All of the adults, other than the gardener, were careless and ignorant. The story itself had flow, but the characters and the actions they took irritated me.
Another futuristic book that I liked was "The Hunger Games". This was entertaining, but it wasn't something I would recommend buying. In fact, I returned my copies.
